Chapter 38 by Kww Kww

Where to next?

Breakfast in Skingrad

You follow Nacius outside and watch him set up a clothes line between his little house and a nearby tree.

"Are you sure that they will dry there? That tree makes a lot of shade." You ask.

Nacius hangs the clothing on the line, tugging it to make sure that it's stable.

"It'll be fine, enough sun breaks through around mid day to get these things dried."

You lean against the wall and watch Nacius finish hanging the clothing before turning back to you, wiping his hands and then putting them on his sides.

"So, you ready to go eat?" He asks.

You walk over to him and nod.

"Of course, Sanna is eager to see what Skingrad has to offer in terms of food." You say.

"Well, lets get going, maybe we can get there and get some fresh stuff from Salmo."

The two of you begin walking, Skingrad was only a short walk from the little house, you would occasionally attempt to walk without your cane, only to quickly rely on it anyways.

"Who is this Salmo you brought up? Are they a chef?" You ask.

"He's the best baker in all of Skingrad, maybe even all of Cyrodiil if you ask me." Nacius replies.

"Ohh, Sanna will be the judge of that! Khajiit know their baked goods." You say with a mischievous grin.

Nacius laughs. "Really? How come?" He asks.

"Khajiit love to bake, especially cakes and sweet things." You reply.

"Well I've known your people have a sweet tooth, no offence, but the amount of moon sugar I've confiscated at the border is insane."

You scowl at him. "Sanna knows that moon sugar is banned in Cyrodiil, but that is because the rest of Tamriel doesn't know how to properly use it! Instead you make skooma or you eat too much sugar too fast and you get the shakes!"

Nacius puts his hands up and chuckles.

"Relax! I don't mean to offend, I just do my job... Plus, most of the Khajiit I find the sugar on don't look like they want to do any baking with it." He says, slowly putting his hands down.

The two of you continue walking silently for a while, you occasionally have to stop every now and then to stretch your wounded calf.

"You okay love?" Nacius asks, worried about your leg.

"Sanna will be fine, she can just feel when her leg is about to give out and has to give it a stretch, she hopes this heals soon, she hates this damn cane." You reply.

"Just making sure, I feel kind of bad to be honest with you." He says rubbing the back of his neck.

You stop stretching your leg and straighten yourself back up.

"Why? It is not like you're the one who took a chunk out of this ones leg." You say

Nacius sighs and rubs his forehead.

"I just feel like I could've acted sooner, you know? Maybe your leg wouldn't be as bad as it is now."

You put a reassuring hand on his shoulder, causing him to look up into your eyes.

"You had your own problems to deal with love, we've talked about this, the wolf attack is nobodies fault, wolves are wolves, unless some mad Bosmer with a bloodlust wanted us dead for some strange reason!" You say, laughing.

Nacius smiles and laughs before the two of you begin walking again, soon the two of you are in Skingrad.

The air was misty in the city, it felt cooler as well, it was a nice crisp morning in Skingrad it seemed, the streets weren't too busy, shop owners were just now opening up their stores, guards were trading shifts, and things seemed tranquil.

"Sanna never got a good look at the city when we left, it is a beautiful place." You say, studying the streets and each building.

Nacius chuckles. "Well, wait till you see Anvil, or the Imperial City, Skingrad pales in comparison to those places." He says.

"You are saying that you will take Sanna to these places?" You ask

"Yes ma'am, you wanted to come to Cyrodiil, so I intend on showing you Cyrodiil."

You give Nacius a small jab in the side.

"Don't call Sanna ma'am, especially with this cane!" You say.

"Don't worry, nobody around here thinks your an old woman, you don't look old." He replies.

You sigh as the two of you walk the streets of Skingrad, you marvel at the architecture, it was very obviously Imperial, but the Imperial architecture you had grown used too were that of fortresses that dotted Elsweyr, nothing like what you see here. Nacius leads you to a building with double doors, there was a sign hanging out in front that had a picture of a moon painted onto it.

"This is an inn, but they serve the best food in town, they get their bread and other baked goods from Salmo himself." He says before the two of you enter.

The place isn't too busy, there are a few folks here and there, there are scented candles dotting the tables around the room, but the smell of freshly cooked food and baked bread is overpowering. Nacius finds a table in a corner for the two of you and lets you take a seat.

"I'll go get us our grub, what do you want?" He asks.

"What do they serve?"

Nacius thinks for a moment with his eyes closed.

"Salmo makes breakfast pastries, I've not tried one yet, but you can judge his pastries while you're here." He tells you.

"Ahh, sure, Sanna looks forward to being a critic." You say with a smug look.

Nacius nods and walks over to the counter and orders your food, you overhear the lady at the counter say that Salmo just brought in a fresh batch of goods wich made you excited, you couldn't wait to see what these imperials thought sweet food was.

The lady retreats for a moment before coming back with a plate full of food, Nacius pulls out a handful of septims and hands them to her before walking back to your table with the food.

"I got myself some soup and a few of Salmo's rolls, oh and the lady said that all of this is fresh too, which is exactly what I was hoping for."

Nacius takes a seat across from you and slides you your pastry, it was warm, there was steam coming off of it still, you watch Nacius begin to eat his food before digging into yours.

"Now to watch the critic do her thing." Nacius says, watching you intently.

You pick up the warm pastry and take a bite, you had to admit, it was very good, but it wasn't as sweet as you would like, these Imperials are really missing out.

Nacius grins as you chew the pastry, eventually you swallow your first bite.

"Soo? How is it?" He asks.

You sarcastically smack your lips.

"It's actually quite good, Sanna is let down by the lack of sweetness however, but she had already assumed that would be the case." You reply.

"So you really think moon sugar would add to it huh?" He asks, taking a quick bite from one of his rolls.

You scoff. "One day Sanna is going to get her hands on some moon sugar and cook with it, only then will you see what she means."

You take another bite of your pastry.

"Well, to be fair, Sanna hears that non Khajiit don't really handle moon sugar well." You say with a mouthful.

The two of you eat in silence for a moment before Nacius speaks up.

"So I don't want to be rude by asking, but what is it with Khajiit and sugar?" Nacius asks.

Oh boy, it would take you a while to explain this to him.

"Are you willing to sit through a long winded explanation Nacius?" You say with a chuckle.

"Try me." He grins...

Welp, here we go
