Chapter 115 by Vox121 Vox121

What's next?

Follow Them Upstairs

Sighing, I went after Kayla. Kaylee followed me looking like a stern teacher marching a student to the principal’s office. We were led up an ornate set of stairs. There were a ton of people here, and I could have sworn I saw the governor talking with some other important looking women. If it wasn't the governor, it was her doppelganger. Upstairs, it was like we had the whole place to ourself. Besides the three of us, there was no one. I couldn’t even hear the low murmur of conversation.

Opening a door, she gestured for us to enter. Inside was a bedroom. I looked around in awe. It was not what I expected. Like stepping into another world. While the rest of what I’d seen of the house had been filled with opulence and luxury, this had a more homely feel. Considering how different it was, it must have cost a fortune to customize it. There was a rustic feel to the room. The bed was against a stone wall. Across from it, a stone fireplace with a plush leather couch facing it. Bookcases stuffed with books stood on both sides of the fireplace. At the far side of the room was nearly all windows with a glass door leading out to a stone balcony.

The bedroom was bigger than my damn living room.

Kaylee gently nudged me inside. Plodding inside, I gawked at the decor.

“Sit,” she said, pointing to the bed. She didn’t need to tell me twice. It might have looked like I was following her orders, but my feet were killing me. These shoes were torture devices. I could only imagine how the design process went.

‘How does it feel?’

‘Terrible.’

‘Excellent!’

Either that or the person who designed the shoe didn’t have a normal foot.

“This is a nice room,” I said to no one in particular.

“Thanks,” Kayla said.

“Your room?” She nodded. Kaylee stood by the door, closing it.

Kayla glanced over at Kaylee when she moved next to her. She had her arms crossed, a concerned look on her face. “He seems pretty drunk.”

I was tipsy at best.

“Yeah,” she said with a resigned sigh. “Might have gone a bit overboard with the champagne.”

“That champagne was practically water.”

“Yeah. He doesn’t drink.”

Kayla seemed surprised and more than a little amused. “At all?”

“Scott is,” she hesitated a moment before finishing with, “a bit of a straight arrow.”

“Well that’s boring.”

“Shut it,” Kaylee said with a lighthearted laugh. “It’s sweet. One of the reasons why I love him.”

“Wow. Dropping the ‘L’ word already?” She gave Kaylee an overly suspicious look. “Who are you, and what have you done with my cousin?”

“I’m right here,” I said, earning a look from both of them. It was weird seeing them standing side-by-side like they were. Kaylee was the clear winner of course, but Kayla had inherited the charm of her mother. I had to stop looking before my thoughts got away from me.

More giggling followed from the both of them. “He going to be okay?” Kayla asked.

I flopped back onto the bed, tuning them out. Holy shit. It was like someone had flown to heaven, grabbed the softest cloud possible, then stuffed it inside a mattress.

What happens next?
