The wedding
Magnus’s mother showed him to his room, apologizing for it. “It was used mostly for storage but it emptied out with fewer children at home” she said as they headed up the stairs. The room was small by comparison to the house and a little dark but was probably no smaller than his own childhood bedroom. A small double bed against one wall and an antique cupboard and dresser. It was actually quite cosy and he was left to unpack his things before rejoining the wedding.
Sean found himself alone until Chloe and Magnus found him for the drive to the church. He genuinely felt like the third wheel as the pair of them talked about things that were going on or people they had been talking to who Sean had no point of reference for. They also were so comfortable with their casual intimacy that if he hadn’t known better he would have assumed they were a couple. The thought of her being his girlfriend aroused him but he was confident that they were just fantasies but seeing them walk with their hands held to the church added just enough doubt to make it exciting.
There was a strange moment of tension in the church as the bride was late. It was just getting to the point where the congregation were beginning to mumble when she made an appearance. Ingrid looked beautiful. Sean had met her in passing and had remembered how attractive she was. Where Anna was perky and cute, Ingrid was statuesque and alluring and like most brides on their wedding day she exuded beauty. She walked down the aisle and joined her nervous looking husband. She leaned to him and said something in his ear that made him yelp a little blush furiously. The wedding was under way.
As was traditional the wedding procession went past the bride, groom and their families. Sean shook the groom's hand who still seemed to be flushed and moved on to Ingrid. It took her a couple of seconds to recognise him and when she did a wry smile crept over her face which unnerved Sean a little. “Sean” she greeted him in her posh, flamboyant voice “So happy to see you here.” That was nice thought Sean feeling very welcomed. She kissed him on the cheek “I hope you have a stimulating evening” she added with a wicked smile but before he could react she was on to the next person and he was greeting the groom's father. What was that about he wondered.
As photos were taken and sparkling wine drunk in the grounds of the estate, Sean managed to carry out some conversations with people who he instantly forgot. The highlights were watching his wife and his friend looking every bit the couple and catching Anna’s eye, who had given him an enthusiastic wave and started to head over. Unfortunately she had got poached by the photographer before they could talk. If nothing else he would have just liked a friendly face to talk to.
The reception began with dinner and mercifully Sean found himself at the same table as Magnus and Chloe. He actually kind of enjoyed the ruse and felt more involved as he listened to the stores they had made up about the fake couple’s past.
At dessert the happy couple did the rounds around the tables. Ingrid and Chloe seemed to get on very well which Sean found odd. He had assumed Ingrid’s unusual personality would have put Chloe off but whatever gossip Ingrid had shared with Chloe had them both laughing like schoolgirls. He caught Magnus’s eye who looked just as confused as he did and they both shrugged.
The evening moved on and soon it was the first dance. They danced to a piece of classical music and her husband moved with surprising grace and for once looked calm and in control as his stunning new wife gazed at him adoringly. The band struck up as the applause died down after the dance and people were encouraged onto the dance-floor.
Sean watched as his wife was led onto the dance-floor and his friend took her in his arms and began to move. He was enthralled by the scene and he jumped when someone took his hand and pulled him onto the dance-floor too. It was Anna and she looked excited to finally get Sean in this situation. Unfortunately for her he was constantly distracted by his wife.
Anna got increasingly frustrated as she tried to keep his attention but his gaze would drift off. Eventually she got cross and stormed off. Sean suddenly realised that he must have been doing something wrong and left the dance-floor awkwardly on his own.
The night passed in a blur, in part because of the **** but mostly because he couldn’t stop watching his wife. She danced a lot. She enjoyed dancing and didn’t get a chance often apart from the rare girls nights she would go on with her friends. Sean usually felt too self conscious and generally avoided it. He considered changing that as he watched Chloe dance with Magnus. She was incredibly sexy on the dance-floor and Magnus seemed to pick up on it too as he increasingly ran his hands over her body as they moved and kissing became increasingly common.
She didn’t even look towards Sean, he only had eyes for Magnus. This made his heart beat with doubt but in his drunken haze, it was exciting. It was fortunate that the revellers were too involved in their own good times to notice the creepy guy who was constantly staring at the attractive couple on the dance-floor. That was apart from two. Behind Sean, towards the other end of the marquee two sisters were having a secret conversation about him.
