Chapter 31

Well? What did you do for a living?
You were a bad-ass Government Commando
"I used to be a Government Commando," you say.
"I'd heard rumors about them..." she says apprehensively.
"The rumors are all true," you say.
"You know what to do," Captain Pacco says.
"I do," you say and leave.
You hop in your Humvee and leave the base, taking a winding mountain path. You emerge not far from Nao's camp. It's a sprawling, unruly mishmash of cars, trucks, tarp-tents, and people just sitting out in the elements. But despite the chaos, you easily spot Father Nao's tent. Like any power hungry madman, he keeps the nicest for himself.
In your civilian clothes, you don't immediately stsnd out and easily slip into the camp. But as you approach Father Nao's tent, you notice several armed men standing around the entrance. When they see you, they raise their weapons.
"Halt! Who the hell are you?" one asks.
You need to come up with a convincing lie or they'll shoot you on the spot.
"I'm a medical doctor. I was told that Father Nao isn't feeling well," you say, holding up the med kit from the Humvee.
"Better search him, first," one says.
You hold up your hands as they pat you down. None think to check the med kit in which you've hidden a knife.
"Alright, let him in," the soldier says finally, opening the tent flap.
You step in, and he drops it behind you. The tent is rather sizable, with multiple rooms. The one you're in right now is empty. But in the next one over, you can hear multiple voices talking.
"But their commander says that if we surrender, they'll let us in," a man says.
"Meh, it's a trick! Only a fool would believe that!" Father Nao says in a voice that the universe only reserves for crazy old men.
"But the horde is right behind us! We're trapped," a woman says.
"Stupid girl! Don't be foolish! We send the children in at sundown and either the military devils will surrender as they should or God will smite them for killing the innocents. I have foreseen it!" Father Nao yells at them.
You hear the woman begin to cry. "But the children...," she sobs.
You've heard enough. You pull out your hidden knife and step through the doorway.
"Hmmm? What do you want?" the crazy old man says.
You stab him in the neck, and he makes a soundless scream as he clutches at the wound. As you wait for Father Nao's body to go limp, his two followers stare in shock at the scene.
"Not a word," you warn.
You drop the body and it lands in a heap.
"Now, you've got two options. You can scream and the guards might come before I kill you both and escape. Or, you can go call for a surrender and save yourselves and your children," you say.
The man looks at the girl. She nods, still in shock but understanding the situation.
"Choose quickly," you say.
"I...I...S-S-Should we surrender?" the man asks in a quivering voice.
You nod.
"It's the best chance for our children," he says.
"Yes, yes it is," the woman says.
You watch them run off, out the tent. Then you cut a slit in the back of the tent and quietly slip away. Between Father Nao's **** and word spreading of a surrender, it doesn't take long for the Army of Nao to fall apart and surrender. The majority give up their arms without a fight. But you find out back at base that a hundred or so of Nao's most hard core followers actually allow the approaching horde to take them. Still, if they'd been allowed to attack, it would have been much worse.
"Good job, Drako," Captain Pacco says when you return.
"Don't celebrate too early," Betty says. "The horde is nearly here."
Indeed, the zombies are moving slowly but unerringly toward Camp Michael. You wonder just how bad things are going to get.
You are about to find out...
"The terrain restricts the main body of the horde to attacking from just one direction. So that's where we'll concentrate our defenses. Stragglers of course will come from all angles, so highly mobile units will patrol all other directions," Captain Pacco explaines his defense plan to everyone in the forward command center.
It's a simple plan but that's probably for the best.
"Infantry will form the main defensive line, with what little armor and artillery we have in the support position. Law enforcement and militia will operate as reserve in case things get really ****," Captain Pacco goes on. "Now, move out soldiers."
With the last bit of discipline they still have left, the remaining soldiers set out to defend their last stand. You are assigned to be on patrol. Your MG42 has been affixed to the top of your Humvee. You and Betty set out, driving through the cornfields in the valley to the south.
"This is boring," Betty complains. "I wanna be on the front line, fighting the zombies. Not looking for stragglers out here!"
You continue to look out for the undead, but it's mostly quiet. You're beginning to get board, too. You long to just be fighting something, anything. It's too easy out here, while others are on the front line. It's a long time later, to be exact nightfall, before you pick up on any zombies. You and Betty are about halfway through your patrol when you notice some movement in the cornfield you passed a while back. Betty pulls over and you scan the area with your search light. You immediately spot the source of the movement, a couple of zombies, wandering through the maze of corn. They shamble towards your position.
"I'll take care of them," you announce to Betty, as you swing your MG42 in their direction.
You open fire, releasing a burst of lead. The first zombie falls over, bullets tearing through its head. The second one lurches forward, only to meet the same fate.
"That's a little excitement, at least," you say.
You and the other teams ride out the rest of the night, taking down small groups of zombies throughout the countryside. Nothing gets through, but it's clear that more will need to be done to secure the area in the future.
"God damn it! I wanna be on the front line!" Betty screams.
"Remember what Captain Pacco said, before he assigned us this post. He needs good people out here, defending the flanks," you try to comfort her.
"I know...," she admits. "I just hate missing out on the action."
You decide it's about time to 'relieve the front lines'.
What the hell does that mean?
