Chapter 39 by ThomasMoro

What happens next?

Fifi and Brunhilde encounter a problem upstairs

"Well, I found a good dress, Brunhilde," said Fifi as she exited the upstairs hotel room where they had been storing their clothes. "Do you think it will fit the policewoman?"

"At this point, I really doubt she cares all that much if it fits or not," said Brunhilde as she stood in the hallway. "As long as it gives her something to cover herself with."

"How about underwear?" asked Fifi.

"Well, I already changed mine for the day," said Brunhilde. "Why do you ask?"

"No, I mean for the policewoman," said Fifi. "I know we French have a certain reputation in that area, but since the woman in question is not French, then perhaps --"

"We'll worry about that later," said Brunhilde. "Right now we have to -- Hey, wait a minute. Where's the dress?"

"What do you mean?" asked Fifi. "It's right here in my hand -- Oh, wait. It's gone."

"Yes, I can see it's gone," said Brunhilde. "Where did you put it?"

"Where did I put it?" asked Fifi. "I didn't put it anywhere. I just held it right here and then -- Mon Dieu!"

"What is it?" asked Brunhilde.

"Something's taken your skirt," said Fifi.

"Don't be silly," said Brunhilde. "I would have noticed that if it had happened."

Then Brunhilde looked down and saw that her skirt was indeed gone.

"Well, at least you're still fully dressed," said Brunhilde. "Go back into the hotel room and get me another skirt."

"Of course, Brunhilde," said Fifi, only to hear a sudden ripping noise as she turned.

Fifi looked down and saw that her dress was now gone. One moment it was on her body, the next it was floating in mid-air. Then it went to the end of the hallway when Fifi tried to grab for it and disappeared over the staircase railing.

"Oh, no!" cried Fifi. "It must be the Invisible Man. And now he's picking on us."

"Quick!" cried Brunhilde. "Get the key. Maybe if we can lock ourselves in the hotel room, we can escape his further attempts to strip us."

"Good idea," said Fifi.

But no sooner had Fifi got the key out of her purse than an invisible hand snatched it out of her grasp, took it down the hallway and then threw it over the staircase railing.

"Where do we do now?" asked Fifi.

Brunhilde tried to answer but she was too busy holding on to what was left of her blouse and trying not to feel like she was fighting a losing battle...
