Chapter 3 by daciasdesire daciasdesire

What does Robyn pick?

Money.

"I hate to say it Em, but we really do need to do something about our money," Robyn said rather despondently.
"Yeah I know your right but does it have to be right now?" asked Emma.
"How much money you got," Robyn inquired.
"Umm about thirty bucks. You?" Emma replied.
Robyn opened her purse to see what she had. She spotted a couple of notes in amongst the small change, "Fifty dollars or there about. How much we paying for this camp site?"
"A hundred and twenty a week."
Neither girl had to say anything about their depressing financial situation. The decision had been made for them.

After eating what little they had in the way of food they agreed to head into the main area of town to see what jobs were available. This town like many others along the south coast of WA had a strong tourism industry due mainly to its many pristine beaches and other beautiful natural sites. They could quite easily find jobs within the service industries. Robyn and Emma made some inquires at the local pubs and bars and were offered a position as casual bar staff if they choose to accept it. They were told how the work wasn't too taxing, had a fair rate of pay but with only so many hours available for the pair of them. They asked the owner to hold the job and to not fill the position until they had a chance to think about it.

While they wondered the town discussing the offer between them they came across a flyer posted in a shop's window requiring people, preferably travelers or backpackers, to work in one of the regions many vineyards. Wine production had really boomed as an industry in this country in the past few years with Western Australian wine competing successful on an international level. They made a note of the phone number and went off to a phone-box so that Robyn could make the call. With Emma listening in, Robyn rang the person in charge who told them they needed workers for the next couple of week to help them picking grapes. The pay was better than the pubs but was much longer hours of very hard backbreaking work. They thanked the gentleman for his time and hung up to consider this opportunity also.

They spent some of the money they had left between them and bought lunch for themselves from a local bakery. While eating they weighted up the merits of eat job in tern. The bar work was convenient evening hours giving them plenty of time in the morning and day for surf and relaxing. Also they had the chance to socialize while working with whatever cute guys might be in the bar. The work at the vineyard however paid better would be harder but perhaps they might meet a handsome foreigner from somewhere like France or South America or any number of other exotic locations.

After finishing lunch and as they were walking out of the shop's door Emma spotted something very exciting in the shops window. They must have missed it on the way in but there was a giant A3 color poster advertising a professional surf tournament that was taking place in town starting tomorrow.
"Emma that's great and all but how does this help our money situation. There is no way you or me could win something like that," Robyn said dismissing it.
"No, not the competition, although you would have a better chance than your giving yourself credit for. I'm talking about what it says below the ad," explained Emma
Robyn looked closer and sure enough she found what Emma was so interested in.

"Other Events Include Bikini Contest Open To Public With A Grand Prize Of One Thousand Dollars"

"You don't want us to enter that do you?" Robyn asked.
"Come on just think of it. One thousand dollars! We wouldn't have to work for weeks with that kind of money," Emma said trying to talk her best friend into entering.

Does Emma convince Robyn or will they get proper jobs elsewhere?
