Torn out of the moment by a sudden noise, I turn my head towards the street. A police cruiser is parked at the curb and a cop is walking towards the building with a flashlight. With shock I grab Mia's hand and pull her after me, swimming towards the rim.
There is no way we can get out of the pool without being seen, so we swim to the far corner of the pool, hoping the high rim would hide us from the cop. Without the possibility to see what he's doing, Mia and I listen carefully. Judging by the footsteps the cop walks up to the fence and I can make out the beam of his flashlight. For several seconds Mia and I are holding our breath, trying to be as quiet as possible. Lucky for us he doesn't do a thorough job searching, because he doesn't see us or our clothes that are lying on the floor and starts to walk away again. The sound of his steps keep getting louder and quieter as he keeps searching the area. It seems like a regular inspection and has nothing to do with our trespassing.
My heartbeat and adrenaline level decrease noticeably when I hear him getting back into his car and drive off a few moments later.
