Run To Me!

"Okay...on three, I want you to run to me as fast as you can." You say to her.

"Are you sure?" She asks, her voice shaking. "What if I don't make it?"

"You will." You assure her. "I won't let anything happen to you."

"O...okay. I trust you." She takes a deep breath. "Count for me."

"One....two....three!" You yell. Melody makes a break for it. You are immensly grateful that she took track in high school, because she speeds along the ice like a bat out of hell. The ice starts to crack and fall apart behind her, but she's manging to stay ahead of it. You are amazed she hasn't slipped even a little bit at all.

Ash she nears you, you see you spoke too soon and she is starting to lose her balance. You immediatly slide closer to her and grab a hold of her arm to help steady her. You pull her ahead of you and give her a push away from the breaking ice to give her some added momentum. This proves to be a bad idea for you when the ice under your feet breaks away and you are embraced by the frozen water of the lake. Your senses go beserk as your brain shuts down from the sudden shock of cold. You vaguely hear Melody scream as you go under the water.

You survival instincts kick in and you swim back to the surface, panting wildly. The cold seems to sap all your energy out of your body and you sink back down into the cold depths. Your consiousness is slowly fading away and things are going black. You hear some vague splashing behind you and see a faint light in front of you. You are momentarily perplexed - you have no idea what way to go, but you only have a few seconds to decide. It feels like your heart could give out at any moment.
