Chapter 6 by zonefire zonefire

What did you do next?

Just move on for now

A large part of you really wanted to write your name on Weiss.

That was impossible at this time though.

The moment Weiss was on her feet, she pulled her hand out of yours, huffed, and left to join the others for orientation while her butler began to gather her things. You sighed and shook your head. Why hadn’t you gotten the courage to try the marker? Was it because Weiss was such a stunner or because you didn’t think it was right to claim someone magically like that. Looking over at Ruby, you saw the girl sticking her tongue out at the retreating figure of Weiss.

“That’s not very mature, Ruby.”

“She’s a meanie!” Ruby huffed, straightening up. “So, umm… we should probably get going.”

“Yeah, don’t want to be late.” You agreed.

“Are you okay?”

You both jumped as a girl with long black hair and a bow stopped near them. There was a book in her hand, which she had lowered to address them.

“I saw the explosion and noticed her yelling at you.” The girl continued.

“It was an accident,” You told the stunning beauty quickly. “Ruby bumped into her and accidently knocked over a vial of dust.”

“It was an accident!” Ruby repeated for clarification. “Why was she so mean?”

“Weiss Schnee is heiress to the SDC,” the girl replied. “One of the largest suppliers of dust in the world, but also infamous for its controversial labor forces and questionable business practice.”

“Well… er… I wouldn’t know about that,” You tell her. “Sounds like you know more than we do.” Ruby nodded. The girl shrugged and walked off with the rest of the students.

“Ah!” Ruby released. “We didn’t get her name!”

“There will be plenty of time for that,” You assured her. “Let’s go or we’ll be late.” The two of you quickly followed the others before they got lost.

The auditorium was packed with all sorts of students, but Ruby quickly located her sister’s wild bright blonde hair.

“YAAAAAANNNNGGG!” Ruby cried out, rushing over.

“Hey, sis!” Yang greeted. “Having a good first day?”

“Why did you ditch me?” Ruby huffed. “I accidently bumped into someone and exploded!”

“Ouch, melt down already?” Yang asked.

“No, she literally exploded by knocking someone’s dust out of their luggage.” You snickered.

“Jaaauuuunnnneee!” Ruby protested at your amusement.

“Really, Tom?” Yang asked, smirking. “Tell me more?”

“How long are you going to call me that?”

“Until I get bored or think of a better name.”

You sighed.

“That’s really all there was to it, though the girl was a little crabby. First day jitters maybe?”

“No such thing!” A familiar voice cut in.

“Not again!” Ruby yelled, jumping into Yang’s arms as Weiss appeared.

“Hmph.” Weiss huffed and held out a pamphlet for Ruby, before rattling off something that sounded like the subtext in a commercial that manufacturers never want you to hear but were required to say.

Dust for Dummies and other Inadequate Individuals.

“Looks like you two got off on the wrong foot,” Yang told them, trying to smooth over the situation. “Why not start over and try to be friends?”

“Great idea!” Ruby then turned to Weiss. “Hi, Weiss. I’m Ruby! Want to hang out?”

“Yeah and we can paint our nails, try on clothes, and talk about cute boys like tall, blonde and scraggly here.” Weiss replied sarcastically, tapping you on the breast plate.

“Really?” Ruby asked surprised.

“No!”

“Well, she called me cute, so I’m going to chalk that up as a win for today.” You commented and Weiss rolled her eyes.

“You’re just slightly higher on my list than her.” Weiss told you, before stomping off.

“Argh!” Ruby cried out. “She’s so mean!”

You shared a laugh with Yang at her and then were **** to turn your attention to the podium were the headmaster, a white haired man named Ozpin, began to talk. His monotone voice quickly caused you to slowly tune him out and think about the market in your pocket. You really wanted to test it out more and figured going over what you knew about it was the best decision right now.

1.) The power of ownership uses the marker in your pocket. (Obviously)

2.) People seem to rationalize the ownership, ignoring or forgetting conflicts in memory. (Such as Ruby and her weapon)

3.) The power can seemingly affect most physical objects regardless of their size. (From a book to an entire Bullhead.)

4.) People only recognize the ownership once they saw your name on the object. (When Ruby noticed your name on her weapon.)

You wondered what other rules were in place that you didn’t know of. Was it really just the marker or was it anything you wrote your name with? If it was just the marker, could anyone use it? That would be dangerous and you needed to make sure quickly. If so, the marker could never leave your sight. Then, could you own part of an object? Maybe write your name followed by a section of the object to own. Might be interesting to see what happens when you own part of something. Also, if you wrote someone else’s name on something, would they own it?

So many questions

“Jaune…Jaune!?”

You were quickly brought back to the present by Ruby shaking your arm.

“W-what’s going on?” You asked.

“Speech is over,” Ruby whispered. “You dozed off.”

“Oh, did it?” You scratched the back of your head embarrassed. “Sorry.”

“Falling asleep while standing up,” Yang snickered. “Not bad, Tom.”

Since orientation was over, you followed the others into a large room with sleeping bags for them all to sleep in. You were a little surprised they were going to let boys and girls all sleep together like this, but then you realized most of the girls here could snap you like a twig. The main downside to having snuck your way into Beacon. Hopefully the training here would get you caught up quickly. You pulled out your onesie, a gift from your sisters, and put it on. It was a little childish, but comfy.

You didn’t realize your mistake until you were out with everyone else. There was a weird feeling in the back of your mind that people were pointing and laughing at you. It wasn’t until you saw Ruby and Yang that you realized what the problem was. Both were in their sleep wear. Ruby had a black tank top and white sweatpants with roses. Yang rocked an orange tank top and black shorts. As you sat down on a sleeping bag, Ruby had a hand over her mouth and was trying not to burst out laughing. Yang wasn’t nearly as reserved.

“What the heck is with that onesie?” Yang blurted out. “Are you, like, 5?”

“It was a gift from my sisters!” You protested. “It’s comfy and warm!”

“It looks…snrk…great.” Ruby obviously lied.

“Ugh… I know I shouldn’t have told them I would take it.” You moaned, collapsing on your sleeping bag.

Ruby quickly decided she needed to take your mind off it.

“Jaune, this is Blake!” She pointed to the raven haired girl with the bow. “I found out her name!”

“Only because I pushed you.” Yang muttered.

“Hey,” You greeted and she nodded. It was obvious she wanted to read her book so you smiled and turned back to distract Yang. She seemed grateful for your efforts. Ruby was busy finishing writing a letter. “So you bullying Ruby?”

“Pssh, teasing, Tom, teasing.” Yang corrected you and then looked a little apologetic. Her next words were a whisper. “Hey, Ruby showed me the weapon you gave her and I wanted to thank you. She’s been wanting a weapon for a lot time, but nothing really matched up with her.”

“Ruby’s a friend,” You replied back, equally as quiet. “I didn’t want her to get into any trouble during initiation.”

“You’re a good guy To-… Jaune.” Yang corrected herself in mid-sentence. “Sorry about earlier. Though, you were peaking, but I guess you’re still a guy.”

“I was nervous and let my eyes wander.” You admitted. Yang shrugged, but before she could say anything, another girl joined you.

“Hello, again!” Pyrrha greeted, “Room for one more?” She was wearing a simple white t-shirt and red shorts, but she looked amazing.

“Sure!” You told her, scooting over. “This is Blake, but she’s absorbed in her book. Blake, this is Pyrrha.” There was a short exchange of nods before Blake’s eyes went back to her reading material.

“Hey, Pyrrha!” Ruby greeted cheerfully, putting her finished letter away. “Ready for tomorrow?”

“I’ll try my best for sure,” Pyrrha replied and then looked at you closely. “Nice… pajamas.” She was trying not to laugh and failing.

“I know, I know, but it was a gift from my sisters!” You protested loudly, earning some snickers from not only the girls around you, but a few nearby people too.

“Can you keep it down?!” The familiar voice of Weiss nearby cried out. “Some of us are trying to sleep!”

“We probably should get some rest,” Pyrrha agreed. “It’s supposed to be a long day tomorrow.”

“Yeah, I’m pretty beat myself.” You agreed, slipping into your bag.

The lights went off shortly afterwards and everything slowly grew quiet. Random snores punctuated the silence but you couldn’t sleep. There was a lot on your mind and you were incredibly nervous. Your transcripts were fake, you lacked training, and now you had a magic marker that could give you ownership of things just by writing your name on them. Yet, you had a hard time using it, as most people wouldn’t let you write on their stuff. Pyrrha was surprised when you wrote on her book and didn’t stop you. Ruby was distracted when you took her weapon. Maybe you just needed a good opportunity to try it on someone.

Maybe a god was watching over you because the next second you heard a voice.

“Pssh, Jaune? You awake?”

You turned over to see Ruby smiling at you in the dark.

“…Yes, Ruby.” You sighed. “What’s up? Can’t sleep?”

“Nervous about tomorrow. You?”

“Definitely.”

“So… since we’re both up… want to prank Yang?”

Well, you didn’t see that coming.

“Prank Yang?” You asked surprised. “How?”

“Draw on her face?” Ruby suggested and then her quiet voice grew eager. “Oh, we could give Weiss a mustache.”

A short chuckle escaped your lips and you were going to tell her no, but then you realizing something.

People were asleep.

You could try writing your name on someone and see what happens in the morning. Worst thing, they get mad at you for writing on them. If it did work… you would see what happens when people consider you their owner. It was too tempting not to try. Even if you couldn’t work up the nerve to try on Yang or Weiss, Pyrrha was an option, along with convincing Ruby to try it.

“Okay, sure.” You replied.

Who do you target?
