The days go by pretty quick and I feel more and more at home. Everyone seems to come to terms with me staying with them, although Beth is trying to avoid ma as much as possible. School starts in a couple of days and I've even been looking in some of my old school books. In the moment I try to figure out some calculus.
“What are you reading?” Kate asks me from the hallway.
“Looking in some school books. I haven't been the best student in the past. And I guess the standards here are pretty high.” I reply, still looking in the book.
“If you want I can ask Kelly to tutor you.” she replies and puts some of my clean clothes on my bed.
“Kelly?” I ask curious because I don't remember hearing the name before.
“Kelly Resnick. She's a genius and in her senior year with Beth. Actually she is the twin-sister of Beth's boyfriend Sean.” Kate tells me. I don't know what is more unbelievable, that Beth with her arrogant attitude has a boyfriend, or that his sister is a genius.
“Well, I.......” I stammer. It has never been easy for me to accept help, because in my neighborhood you either survive or not. Asking for help is often seen as weakness. But before I say more, I realize it was just a rhetorical question. It took me some time, but I think I have Kate figured out pretty well. She will do anything for her children, if they want or not. “Okay.” I say to close the matter and continue to study.
