It's hard to discern...

Jeremy stood just inside the doorway, listening for the sound. He couldn't quite make out the location of it. He started for the kitchen thinking it was there, but then it could just have easily been up stairs, or even in the basement.

Perhaps it was outside.

He also wasn't sure what the sound was exactly. It could have been anything, really.
