Finishing Lunch
Kaylee never came back. Finishing my lunch, I tossed the remains and stacked the trey with the others. Liam was beside me the whole time. It had been awkward without Kaylee there since I wasn’t particularly close to any of the other girls. They kept asking all sorts of questions about Kaylee and me, and I didn’t really have answers for them. Fortunately, Liam managed to drag me out of the conversation and we spent the latter half of lunch talking about movies, comics, and video games. Once we started on that, the others ignored us and talked amongst themselves.
“She really asked you out?” Liam asked once we were away from the girls. I checked over my shoulder to make sure.
“Yeah.”
His eyes never left me. “So you went.”
I looked away, feeling guilty. He tried warning me, and I went anyways. “Yeah.”
“And?”
“And what?”
“Did she and Sean…”
“No.”
“Huh.”
“It was another guy. Some guy she knew who graduated last year.” That got a raised eyebrow. “Yeah, they did,” I said, answering his unasked question. “She asked me out after they were uh… finished.”
Liam gave me a long look before speaking. “Is this going to be a regular thing then?”
I couldn’t meet his gaze. He had warned me about not knowing what I wanted. All I knew is that I wanted a chance with Kaylee. “I don’t know.” Before he could say anything, I cut him off. “But I know we need to talk about it. We are just figuring things out so we are going to take things slow.”
Something caught Liam’s eye. I followed his gaze and felt my stomach drop. Kaylee was talking with someone I recognized all too well. Sean. “Okay, but does she know that?” he asked as he looked back at me.
