Chapter 22 by floppy15
Do you talk to her doctor? Give Jack's mom a call?
The waiting game
You check the form one more time, you don't want to miss anything. You get to your feet and walk to the front desk.
„Here. When will you know what's wrong with her?“ you aks the nurse when you hand her the clipboard. She quickly looks the form over and puts it on her desk. After searching for a second she takes another file and studies it.
„Dr. Stevens took a look at her. She has an infection. A colleague took some blood and it is on the way to the lab. She will get broad spectrum antibiotics for now“ she tells you. You try to process all the information she just gave you.
„Can I see her?“ you ask her, almost begging.
„Not before the lab results are back. A precaution for your and her safety.“ she lectures you. „It will take an hour or two max. Go get a cup of coffee or something. I'll let the doctor know that you want to stay imformed of her condition.“
Without a word you are walking back to the waiting area. That aren't the good news you had hoped for. Every few seconds you look at the clock at the wall, which makes time seem to have stopped. Your sanity is holding up for about an hour. Another minute and you'll go crazy, you need to do something.
You get to your feet and walk outside. On the way you pull your cell phone out of your pocket. You have to tell her mother. The call she will get has to be a nightmare for a parent.
The phone rings for several seconds before you hear someone pick up. It is pretty loud at the other end of the line.
„Elaine?“ you almost shout in the phone.
„Hello. Jack? Is that you?“ a voice which you recognize as Elaine's answers. You almost shout back, when the noise in the background suddenly disappears. „Sorry about that. I just needed to find a quiet place. What circumstances brings me the pleasure of a call from you?“
Trying to think of how to tell hert, you pause for a moment.
„Melody is sick.“ you tell her and pause.
„Sick? Is it serious?“ she asks with a concerned tone.
„She got soaked in the rain yesterday night. Today she had a high fever and it kept climbing.“ you tell her.
„That doesn't sound good.“ she comments.
„I couldn't wake her up. I wasn't sure what to do, so I brought her to the hospital.“ you finish explaining the situation. „They'll know what's exactly wrong with her in about an hour.“
„Her allergies!“ she almost screams. Now you can hear the fear in her voice. Melody has severe allergies against some anesthetics.
„I wrote them down.“ you reassure her. After you list every single one to her, she calmed down.
„Thank you Jack. I'm so happy you're with her.“ she says clearly more relaxed.
„I have to take care of a few things before I can come. I think I'll be there tomorrow morning. Let me know the moment you know something.“ she told you. Through the windows of the waiting area you see the nurse waving at you, a woman in a white coat, Dr. Stevens you assume, is standing next to her.
„Elaine, I'll call you back in a sec. Melody doctor is here.“ you tell her before you disconnect the phone. In a fast pace you walk towards the doctor, who has a rather cheerful smile on her face. As you walk up to her you realize that she is gorgeous. Her glasses and the labcoat might hide the fact that she has a gorgeous body from a distance, but her beauty is obvious when you stand in front of her.. For practical reasons she isn't wearing make-up and her dark hair is tied into a ponytail, but her eyes and lips give her a sensual glow. She studies a chart as you step in front of her.
What does the doctor tell you? Can you see her?
