Chapter 39 by orcha
Does either party run into any trouble?
A smooth start
Marie moved cautiously down the hallway, with Irina close behind. Marie noticed that the young medic seemed comfortable with the pistol she was holding, moving it with confidence.
"Hey," Irina broke the silence first, "sorry about your sister. I hope she's alright. There's still a chance, right?"
"Thanks," Marie nodded, "yeah. If anyone could have survived this mess, its her. She's always been smart, careful."
The hallway they were sent to explore turned out to be far shorter than Marie had expected. It contained to doors, a smaller one set in the bulkhead about halfway down its length, and a larger one at the far end. Both were closed, their access panels blinking invitingly. The entire empty hallway was lit with soft white light from overhead, and the sound of the women's steps on the grated flooring reverberated slightly in the enclosed environment.
"No signs of struggle or - hold on. Got something," Irina spoke up again, directing Marie's attention to a vent on the far end of the hallway, next to the door. Its cover was hanging loosely from its proper place, revealing a narrow dark void behind it.
"Good eye, lets stay on our toes," Marie replied, and nodded toward the smaller door. "This one first, then the further one."
The first door slid open to reveal a small utility space housing a piece of machinery that Marie recognized as a water and climate control unit, big enough to be a serving a couple of decks. The thing hummed gently, seeming entirely unmolested by the crisis gripping the rest of the ship. A quick search of the small space revealed nothing alarming, but out of caution Marie locked the door behind her as she exited.
The door at the end of the hall proved more interesting. It slid open at Marie's command, revealing a mid-sized chamber filled with computer consoles and stations. Each of the screens visible from the door were covered in a jumble of warnings, alerts, and error messages. The ceiling of the room was higher than that of the hallway leading to it, and unlike the hallway, the white lights over head were dim and sputtering, making eerie shadows dance on the floor and walls.
"Just great," Marie muttered, "lighting trouble. Let's do a sweep - a careful sweep."
Slowly, Marie and Irina moved into the room.
