Chapter 5 by dr_wankenstein dr_wankenstein

Strike out for the desert

You stride south, as the land gets hotter and drier. Soon enough you're following a road that wides between enormous sand-dunes, while barren mesas tower overhead. Cactus dot the horizon and vultures wheel in the cloudless blue sky.

After a while of this you're starting to get bored. Fortunately, that's when you come to the gates of a town. You see spires, domes and minarets peeking over the top of the wide clay wall that surrounds the place, and walk towards the nearest gate.

The guard does a double-take as you approach. She's wrapped in white robes from head to toe, so you can only see her dark, pretty eyes. They practically pop out as she takes in Daisy's nudity.

"Halt, traveller! You can't come in here looking like that!"

"Why not?" Daisy says, cheerfully.

"Don't you know? This is the City of Veils, where everyone must go decently covered at all times! To expose even an inch of skin is considered an embarrassing faux pas, something people would talk about for weeks. To go around unclothed... why, it doesn't bear thinking about. You must cover yourself at once, you indecent harlot."

"Not me?" you say.

"Oh, you're a man. Nobody cares what men do."

"I see. Hey, this city wouldn't be famous for the beauty of its women, would it?"

"Of course it is. But men like yourself aren't allowed to see it."

"No?"

"Men are naturally inferior, you know. It's the law of the earth goddess, Cethona. We may all be incredibly beautiful, but we'd never **** ourselves by letting a lesser creature like a man take a look at us. Any woman who did would be teased and mocked and made fun of from one end of the city to the other."

"That's why you wear the robes and veils."

"Now you're getting it."

"Just out of curiosity, are you allowed to leave your post for any reason?"

"No, I have to stand here until sunset, no matter what happens or who comes passing through. It's a religious thing. Why?"

"Anyone coming through today?"

"All the merchant caravans, the men going out to fix the roads and probably a few high priestesses of Cethona. Seriously, what's with this line of questioning?"

"Just thinking about where I'm going to get a full set of robes and veils for Daisy. Hey, you look about her size..."
