Chapter 26 by tailteller

Follow James, Aurora, or skip ahead?

Aurora first

She looked on with content at the progress she'd made. Soon the machine would be ready. James had asked what she did for fun. This would show him...though that game definitely has a place in 'fun' now. This would be entirely different. Would he be as excited as her? She hoped so.

The last few components took hours to manage to put together. They didn't have the radioactive isotopes to activate the main mechanism. Though, she managed to find lithium. That would work. She peaked inside, questions dancing across her face.

"Shayee?", she called. The woman remained asleep. Perfect. Quietly, she brought one of the cooking containers out, and pried open six batteries. The strips of lithium inside were hot, and she had to move quickly dumping them into the cooking dish. She silently muttered a curse in her mother tongue, wishing she had appropriate tools. Some water, and one of the copper plates had the mixture boiling itself. She set it down quickly and took shelter behind her machine in progress. The fumes from the boiling mixture were certainly dangerous, but the resulting sediment would be radioactive. At least enough for one charge, and hopefully with enough left to be safe.

When the reaction died down, she moved as fast as she safely could, opening a small compartment on the rim on the machine and dumping in the sediment without touching it. A small test. She reached inside and tapped one of the keyboard buttons she'd repurposed. The machine gave a slowly rising sound, and she turned it off. Excitement overtook her spine, and reflected off of the room around her. Not long now.

Continue with James, or Sally?
