Consent as a Right

More people filed into the room and I'd say only about half the seats ended up being taken, probably 20 people in total.

There were gasps when a latino woman in her late 30's rushed into the room wearing what could be modestly described as a slutty schoolgirl outfit. She had an hour glass shape with large breasts. The short skirt she wore barely covered her whole ass as she moved into the room.

She hurried over to the computer in the middle of the room and plugged in a USB. The first slide of a powerpoint titled, "Introduction to Sex", appeared on the walls of the room.

"Hello, my name is Professor Jennifer Rodriguez," the woman said, out of breath. "Sorry I'm dressed like this on the first day. I didn't have time to change into anything."

Murmurs started as people wondered what exactly she had been doing before class to end up in such a state. I suspected she had been having a little fun as she licked a bit of something white off her lip.

"Let me briefly talk about me and the class, then we'll have a quick lecture about consent." She clicked over to a slide with a picture of her in a yellow micobikini on one side and her educational background in bullet points on the other.

"So, I am a full time sexual education professor having attended colleges blah blah, and blah blah blah," She clicked to the next slide, showing a paper titled "**** Dynamics". "My specialization is actually in **** studies, which the department has deemed too advanced for this class. But if you are interested in learning more, please feel free to come to my office hours or when you've completed this course, I also teach Sex 319: Introduction to ****."

"Anyway, that's about enough about me," She clicked to the next slide, which stated the same topics by week as the syllabus. "As you can see, we've got a lot of ground to cover in the next few weeks and since the best way to learn is by doing, it is important that we first talk about consent, before getting into the weeds, as it were."

She clicked to the next slide titled, "Consent as a Right". I was a little confused that she just blasted right by the course overview. When people saw that she was getting into an actual topic, they started taking out their notebooks.

"Oh, please don't take any notes," Professor Rodriguez said. "I want you to engage with the material. To do that, I feel it's best not to be writing things down. Besides, we're not going to have any tests so it's not like there's anything you need to study."

Next slide. "First thing we need to know is the classic 'no means no'," she smiled. "I believe I just saw a few of you roll your eyes and for good reason. You all know this, but we do need to go over it."

Next slide. "So there are different types of 'no'. The first is to sex generally. This can occur either before or during intercourse."

Next slide. "The second form of no is to a specific sexual act. A person can again exercise this before or during intercourse."

Next slide. "Now that we've covered those forms of no, we must also cover ways of conveying no. There are many ways to convey this. Would anybody like to volunteer one?"

Nobody in the class moved, but casually avoided eye contact with the professor.

She waited a few seconds before pointing to the girl who lived next to me.

"Maybe you could give us an example?"

The girl just stared at her.

"Trust me, this is probably the easiest in class exercise. Remember all you have to do is say 'no'."

The girl shook her head and the professor smiled.

"Perfect. Shaking your head is an obvious one. We will discuss others when we get later into the class where understanding consent becomes more difficult, but just remember to agree to use what we call 'safe words' if you are going to play any games that may not allow for conventional 'no's'. What is your name, dear?"

"Katie."

"Very good, Katie. So we've covered the two types of no and that there are other ways of conveying no," Next slide. "You may also slow down any sexual situation with a 'no' or by saying 'slow down' or a predetermined safe word that is coded to mean the same thing. In those situations, I prefer slow down or a corresponding safe word, just to avoid confusion."

Next slide. "Next we come to body language ques. These are when a person may not want to expressly say 'no', but may reveal with their body language that they do not wish to continue. The most common is to simply pull away with their body."

Next slide. "Finally, we come to when no does not mean no. Can anyone guess when that is?"

Again nobody raised their hand.

"A hint, I've already kind of said it."

A blond guy's hand went up.

"Yes?"

"Maybe, I don't know, during roleplay or something?"

"Yes, exactly right. Good job. What's your name?"

"Dylan."

"Nice job Dylan," she said with a little smile at him. "Okay, before we get into the tutorial part of the lecture, I do have to say something about consent in this class. Unfortunately, this is a required class, which means that you must fully participate in every activity to receive credit. This is unfortunate, because while not expressly violating the terms of consent that we just talked about, I believe it does verge on violating some of the terms of a non-abusive relationship that we will talk about in a future lecture. I will not **** you to do anything you are uncomfortable with. However, failure to complete this class will result in expulsion. Unfortunately, those who are expelled will not see the necessity of this rule and those who are not expelled will only see it after they have already gone through this full course.

"With that said," she clicked to a video. "Let's continue with a demonstration. I apologize for the video, later we will be doing the demonstrations in person, but I think this is a bit better for the first day. Okay."

The video started and the professor was with a man in some sort of lab. Both were wearing lab coats and looking into microscopes. The two were talking, when all of the sudden the man leaned in to kiss her. She backed away and said, "no, not right now."

The professor paused the video and asked what people saw.

A Latino girl raised her hand, "Well, you said no."

The professor chuckled a little, "Correct, anything else?"

"Well, I suppose you also leaned away."

"Yes, so we've got a 'no' and body language que. Is that all?"

She thought, but remained silent. A blonde girl sitting next to her raised her hand.

"Yes?"

"This may not be right, but you also mentioned that it was not okay right then."

"That is exactly right," the professor smiled, looking at the blonde girl. "Thank you..."

"Stacy," the blonde girl said.

"And?" The professor looked at the Latino girl.

"Gabi."

"Thank you both," the professor continued. "As Stacy and Gabi said, I said 'no', gave a body language que and specified that it was the timing of the sexual advance that was wrong."

Next slide. "Okay, so let's see the next example."

There was an audible gasp as the video started to play. The professor was deepthroating the guy from the video before, while still in their lab coats.
