What do you see when you get to the store?

An argument.

Chapter 44 by mememe621

When I trotted down the steps to the main entrance of the store, I heard Isabella before I saw her. “I don’t want your bullshit! Not your bullshit stories and not your bullshit books! I don’t pay you to give me crap no one else would want--I WON’T pay you for crap that no one else would want. Go tell your boss he can take these books and shove them--“

“Lady, lady, take it easy,” interjected a soothing male voice. As I came fully into the store, I saw Isabelle staring down a burly delivery man, with several boxes of books stacked between them like a defensive wall. “This is exactly what you ordered from us, I promise it is.” The delivery man was not only well-built, but tall as well--about equal to my own six foot frame. Yet through Isabella was shorter than him by at least half a foot, it seemed like the fire coursing through her petite frame had reduced him to begging and pleading..

“I certainly didn’t order anything at these prices!” snapped Isabella, her dark eyes flashing. I was struck by the incongruity between her aggressive tone and her feminine, almost dainty appearance--classy black high-heeled sandals with a short black skirt, a lacy red top that made even her small breasts look pert and sexy, dark curly hair cut short framing a pretty face.

“These prices are more than fair, you’re getting a great deal,” said the delivery man, his tone now almost cajoling. “Bella, we’ve worked together so well in the past. Why don’t I take all these boxes to the back, you’ll take a look at what I’ve got, and you can see for yourself if you like it. I’m sure we can work out a deal you’ll be happy with.”

Isabella stared him down for a minute before giving a curt nod. “Mike, I’m glad you’re here,” she called in a friendlier tone, thought without looking at me. I hadn’t realized she’d even noticed I’d come in. “Mind the sales counter while I’m in the back room. Just make sure all customers pay the sticker price--no haggling. I’ll orient you to the store when I’ve finished up in back.”

A little amazed at the intensity of the scene I’d just witnessed, I took a seat behind the counter. I was staring off into space, thinking about how serious Isabella seemed to be as a businesswoman, when the bell on the door tinkled, announcing a new arrival.
