Chapter 13 by cphi cphi

What's next?

Needing a favor.

Beth's evening progressed normally. Busy nights were a double-edged sword.Obviously, business directly translated to more money in her pocket, but it was hard on the feet, and sometimes the psyche. Bucatini had a good crowd, but there were still bitchy guests, and there were always toxic males. Beth's night went smoothly, though. It was even a little bit slow for a Friday, and the regular crowd dwindled down earlier than normal, giving her plenty of time to clean up. By the time the kitchen closed at midnight, Beth was leaning on the bar, watching SportsCenter.
"Don't you have anything else you can do?" Seth gave her a look from behind the bar.
"I've done everything I can, I'm just waiting for the stroke of midnight so I can burn the ice and break the soda machine." She gave him a smile. "If you hate my company, I can wait somewhere else."
"No...it's fine." He was cleaning martini glasses with a rag, and smiled back.
"Hey... I need a favor." She suddenly blurted.
"What were the odds." Seth had a dry wit. Some of the other servers thought he was a stiff prick, but he was just sarcastic and misunderstood.
"I need someone to take my shift on Wednesday."
"Ok, so ask somebody."
"Nobody who was here tonight can. I need you to make some calls."
"I can't do that, it's your responsibility." He shook his head. "What's so important?"
"I'm meeting a new photographer. There's an agency who's interested in me and I want to make a good impression."
Seth smiled. "I'm happy for you, but you're still responsible to get your shift covered after the schedule goes live."
Beth pouted a little. "Can't you just... make some calls for me? Pleeease?" She laced her fingers together in a pleading gesture.
Seth pointed at the clock. "Midnight. Finish up your side-work and bring me your cash." He headed back towards the office. Sun, the bartender, gave her a flat look, and went back to her three bar patrons.
Beth tried not to flounce. Why can't this crush yield some benefits?
She finished up her work, counted her cash, and printed her shift report. Seth was looking over bar invoices when she came into the office.
"You're sure you can't help me?" Beth sat on Brian's desk, dangling her feet, and giving him a coy smile.
Seth gave her a look. "If I pull strings for you, soon everybody's going to expect it."
Everybody already knows you're into me, dude. She just smiled though, and looked down at him. Her uniform shirt was unbuttoned down to the third button. She showed a little neckline: all the girls did. Seth did a terrible job of keeping her eyes on his.
