The tumblers were drained and refilled, and David took his tie off. As he drank more bourbon, he got more and more comfortable sounding off on the frustrations he was going through. "From the beginning, I didn't understand it. I was a newly minted lawyer, working as a public defender. No glamour, no gold, and driving a $2500 Ford Focus. I met Kimmy in a bar: a smoking hot blonde who thought I was funny. She was way out of my league, outfits and make up on point, and I couldn't understand why she was slumming with a guy like me. She was sweet, though. And funny, and supportive and... when I started to get more successful, she was always right there with me." He took another gulp. "And then we got married... and the bottom fell out. She changed overnight."
"That sucks." Beth put a hand on his knee. "Any idea what happened?"
"For the life of me, I can't even make up a story about why. She was never jealous when we were dating, but as soon as that ring was on her finger, it was 'who's that?' 'who are you talking to?' 'are you fucking her?'" He shook is head and laughed. "Yeah, ladies are going crazy for chubby Rivers Cuomo over here."
"I don't...." Beth shook her head.
"He's the lead singer of Weezer." David tapped his glasses. "He's the reason I wear horn-rimmed. I was way into them in college, and law school, too... anyway the point was, what ladies are lining up to be homewreckers with this?"
Beth set down her drink. "David you're a great guy. You're funny, cute, smart, and you're a good lawyer. She saw that, so it's not crazy that other girls would too. That's not the crazy part."
"Thanks, Beth." He smiled, and put a hand on her knee. "I just wish she would cut me a break. I've never given her any reason not to trust me. I don't understand why she's so insecure."
"Well, don't take this as gospel, because I'm a little drunk and I'm pretty sure I don't know what the fuck I'm talking about. Sometimes, when someone suddenly gets insecure and jealous and is always accusing their partner of cheating, it's because they're projecting. It's because they haven't been..."
"Wow... I didn't think of that. Wow..." David suddenly looked very sad, almost like a lost puppy.
"Hey. I'm drunk. I don't know what the fuck I'm talking about. I'm sure it's not the case."
"Yeah. You're right. Enough about me, how about you? Are you getting excited? Can't wait for the big day?"
Beth looked into her glass. "Yeah. Can't wait."
"What's the matter?"
Beth found herself opening up about her relationship problems. It must have been the booze, because she never would have talked about her sex life to anyone at work without it. David never stopped her or seemed uncomfortable, he was just listening.
"Anyway, I'm not sure if this is just temporary. I'm not thrilled with the idea that this is the new normal. I'm signing up for a sexless marriage." She looked at David, and suddenly it occurred to her what she'd been saying, and to whom. "Shit... I shouldn't have said any of that. That's..."
"It's fine. We're opening up." David rubbed her knee. Why did that small gesture make her feel so good? "I won't tell if you won't."
Beth set her drink on coffee table. "In any case, we should get back to work..." she stood up, and immediately realized her mistake as the room spun and she fell directly into David's lap.
"Whoa." David caught her, and the chair rolled back a few inches.
"Shit." Beth started to giggle. "Sorry." She straightened up, looking at David while sitting awkwardly sideways on his lap. "Thanks for catching me."
"It's no problem..." he chuckled a little, too. "Good thing Kimmy isn't here to see this."
"Yeah...." Beth stared at David for a few seconds, breathing heavily. He really is cute. Kim's such a bitch.
