Not sparing a glance at the nightmare coming for him from above, Nicholas lunged forward violently, hurling himself against the far wall of the elevator cabin. Marie's finger stabbed at the control panel, and with a pleasant warning chime, the doors of the cabin began to close. Through the narrowing gap, Marie watched with horrified fascination as something long and glistening began to uncoil itself from the ceiling. Further back in the tunnel, another group of Slashers and Leapers charged toward the door, howling in impotent fury and hunger, claws and tentacles scraping against the metal floor and walls.
When the doors finally slid shut and she felt the telltale motion of the elevator cabin accelerating them away from the chaos, Marie sagged back against the wall, letting out a sigh of relief. She glanced down at Nicholas, lying in a heap on the ground. The pilot stared back at her, mouth silently working to form words.
"What....," he finally gasped out, "what was-"
He was interrupted by a soft chime from the elevator, followed a moment later by the crackle of an open comm.
