Her mom, the original BFF

Jennifer was perpetually frustrated with her daughter. Harley was twenty two and still didn't have a job. She didn't do her own laundry. She didn't help out around the house in any way. She didn't really DO anything.

Which was hard. As a single mother, Jenn had worked very hard to give her daughter all of the advantages she hadn't had.

Despite all of Jenn's best efforts, Harley was on college number four and even that wasn't looking great.

"Hi mom." brought Jenn out of her trance. She wasn't used to being addressed anymore. In fact, she couldn't remember the last time her daughter had initiated any conversation. "What are you doin?"

Jenn tried to come up with a response. "Nothing." She tried to come up with anything else to say. She was constantly giving Harley a hard time for answers like that. "Um...just online. What's up?"

Harley dangled the necklace between them. Jenn was instantly mesmerized and started to reach for them.

"Not so fast. I wanted to share this with you. I'll take one half and you take the other." Jenn waited for the punchline but none came. Harley snapped the pendent in half. She held one in each hand, then offered one to her mother. "Here, now you can really be my BF - Forever."

Jenn saw a real smile and what looked like happiness. She reached for the necklace and prayed this was the answer to all of her prayers.
