You flip the phone open, “Hello?…Yes. Oh hey Mr. Kairns. Uh huh. Yeah that’d be…Are you serious sir? Yes, I’d be delighted to…Tuesday after next? I’ll be there sir.”

You stand ther a second, ecstatic and then turn around to see a sad face on Doe’s face. “Hey, what’s wrong now?”

“You’re going back. You’re going to leave me again.”

“Well, If I want the promotion and transfer to Chicago I’d have to…” You say. The you wait for her reaction.

Her head whips up, making her hair fall in front of her face. She brushes it out of the way, then carefully stands, “Did…did I hear you right? Transfer to Chicago?”

“That was the director of my division. One of the managers in the Chicago Branch office was indicted for embezzlement. He wants me to take over there.”

“That’s a lot closer than New York City.” Doe says, then reaches up and pulls you down for a kiss.

You wrap your arms around her, pulling her close to you.

After breaking the kiss you stare into each other’s eyes, “Doe, this maybe sudden…but…will you do me the honor of accompanying me?”

“Accompany you where?” She asks, breathless, hopeful.

“On our life’s journey. I’m tired of going it alone, my love.”

She closes her eyes, sighing in relief and joy, “Yes. Yes I will accompany you on our life’s journey. And I don’t know about sudden…we’ve known each other way too long for this to be sudden.”
