Chapter 9

How do things progress?
You awake in the night
Somewhere on the way back to your dorm you slip back into the void of unconsciousness again, as you slowly come to, you slowly realize that you are lying in your own bed. As you look around, you notice Melody slumped in a chair beside your bed. Her eyeliner has by now dried again and created a bizarre pattern on her cheeks. The way she is shifting around you deduce that she probably has a bad dream.
Slowly you try to sit up, leaning on your right hand as you always have done. As a sharp pain surges through your arm, you inhale sharply and silently curse yourself for forgetting. Being more cautious you lean on your left hand to sit up in the back of your bed. As you look over to Melody once more you realize that she is crying in her sleep by now. Not wanting to see her like this you decide to wake her.
“Melody?” Your voice is quite hoarse and your throat dried up, so it takes quite a bit of effort to speak up.
“Melody, wake up, you’re just having a bad dream!”
She stirs in her sleep once again, but somehow does not wake up yet.
“Come on, Melody I know you wake up quite easily!”
Slowly she opens her eyes.
“What? Where am… Oh my god, Jack!”
Melody almost jumps up from her chair and rushes to your side, taking your undamaged left hand into hers.
“How are you feeling Jack, I am so sorry I…”
“Relax!” You try to give Melody a confident smile, even though just now the pain from all your cuts starts to begin, and you wish that you still had some morphine. “No harm done right?”
She just looks at you speechless.
“Well at least nothing that won’t heal with time.”
“What about our friendship? How will that just heal with time?”
“Melody, I am...”
“NO!” By now she is screaming as she cuts you off. “I almost killed you Jack! You were lying there showing affection, trying to comfort me and I fucking smash you through a table! No matter what you say, I know that you can’t trust me anymore.”
“Please stop it Melody,” You reply quietly, “it was an accident and it just happened because of my stupid mistake. So if anyone is to blame it’s me, not you.”
Melody just looks at you with her tired and bloodshot eyes, even in this state you cannot help but be overwhelmed by her beauty. Slowly she reaches out to you and hugs you close. You enjoy the warmth of her body against yours, the scent of her hair and her arms around you for what seems to be an eternity. Then she whispers something, more to herself than to you it seems.
“I was so afraid that you were gone Jack, gone without me ever telling you. You are my best friend, I am so ashamed of what I have put you through. I will make it up to you somehow, I don’t know how yet but I will.”
You hug her tightly now, reassuring her of your friendship, hoping she will forgive herself as fast as you have forgiven her. Yet even in this embrace, you feel your senses fading once more and you drift back into unconsciousness. This time your blackout does not seem to last very long. As you come to once more Melody is still kneeling by your bed, holding your hand. She is talking to you again, it seems she is still not done apologizing and somehow she just needs to get it all of her back.
“…You know I liked you from day one, you always made me laugh and you always were there for me whenever I needed you. Some friend I have been, huh? Taking out my worst moods on you and still you smiled and stood by my side every step of the way. Even now, that I almost got you killed you still consider me your friend. I just wish I…”
She takes a deep breath and even tough she is looking right at you she does not seem to realize that you are awake once more.
“…You know, I should have reacted the way I always wanted to react, it was the wrong place and the wrong time, but still I should have reacted differently. I should have kissed you and told you how much I care. Oh god, I don’t think you will ever be close to me again after this.”
Once again she has started crying, resting her head on your hand again.
How do you react to this confession?
