Chapter 8

Do they follow you?
Yes
“This is a very impressive camp you have here” Strabo commented as you lead him through an alleyway of tents. There weren't many here, just enough for a few hundred people but it was still well organised. You had conjured the camp into existence in a rather secluded location. “It seems you are indeed prepared for war” he added as you ducked inside of an armoury tent. It had taken you and Strabo’s boys several hours to round up the fleeing people and get them here, by then it was well into the night and most people just fell asleep wherever they found a spot. Now that dawn was on them though, there was a certain bustle about the camp.
“I did say to leave it to me” you comment as Strabo marched forward and grabbed one of the spears from one of the racks.
“Good thrusting” Strabo commented as he examined the spear “Excellent balance” he added as he jabbed it forward with one hand. “Good Roman stuff this” he complimented as he put the spear back. You suppose that calling it ‘Roman’ was a synonym for quality, like goods made in your own country or something.
“Now all I need is the troops to wield them” you say “Good Roman hands for good Roman swords” you add.
“Not many men left” Strabo told you “Lot’s of them got conscripted to fight in the wars against the barbarians” he explained.
“Then we shall have to open the ranks to those unmarried women” you say and Strabo’s head snapped to you,
“Women?! You would make the women fight!?” he exclaimed angrily.
“We haven’t the manpower” you tell him calmly “Sticking to men of age is an impossibility now” you explain. Strabo’s anger subsides from him and he sighs a defeated sigh, running his hand over his face.
“I will not demand any woman fight” he finally said.
“I wanted a volunteer army anyway” you replied to which Strabo merely nodded
“Strabo! There you are!” came the voice of a cheerful young girl. You turn around and a pretty little teenager of about fourteen dashed in, her face lit up in near endless cheer. “I’ve been looking for you!” she cheerfully exclaimed. Under one arm was a basket of some sort of baked goods.
“Greetings little Cattleya, what have you got there?” Strabo asked, managing a fatherly smile for the young girl.
“There’s soooooo much grain in the store tents! We’ve been baking all morning!” she cheered “Though the elders said we had to use as little as possible, and we didn’t have any yeast” she added as she fished around in her basket and presented a rectangular piece of bakeding to Strabo, it was about sixteen centimeres long and six centimeters wide and looked kind of like a wheat-bix, if only a little lighter in colour and softer in texture. Strabo took the proffered piece of baked sustenance and broke off a piece, letting you know it was definitely a form of bread, just flat and unrisen. “Oh! Here!” Cattleya said suddenly, distracting you from your observation with another of these bits of flatbread. You took the bread with a smile and took a bite of it yourself. You had to admit, it was a very different experience from what you are used to. Normally, bread makers put lots of things into their bread for flavour. Even the most basic of modern bread recipes calls for butter, salt and some form of raising agent. If you had to guess, it tasted a little like wheat-bix just a lot more smooth.
“Not bad” you say and the girl lit up like a damn flare. You’d swear she could be used for signalling purposes.
“Me and Augustus here need to talk about big man things now” Strabo told the girl “So why don’t you run along and help make sure everyone’s settling in” he tells her. The girl, not one to let anything get her down smiled, reached up on her tippy toes, kissed Strabo on the cheek and bounded out of the tent with a ‘bye Strabo’ floating in after her. “That girl” Strabo chuckled softly, “I miss my son dearly but she never lets me dwell on it” he sighs, that was a lot more information than you needed.
“We will need to plan which settlements will be receptive of us and offer volunteers” you say to the man who instantly drew himself up and back into his military demeanor. “We’ll pay in food of course, I’ll take care of providing the grain shipments” you add.
“Yes, as good an idea as any, most people around here have been having issues with food since the bread baskets outside of Italy have been taken from us” Strabo commented “We will need to supplement our own supplies first, some game from the local area” he mentioned
“I trust you can take care of that?” You ask, it wouldn’t be fun if you solved every single problem with a quick application of your god powers.
“Yes” Strabo grunted “Thirty-three years in the legion taught me how to use a sling to hunt if nothing else” he told you, and hot damn that was a long time to be a soldier you thought.
“And once our bellies are full, we can start talking to other towns” you say.
“I can’t talk you out of this fools’ errand can I?” Strabo asked rhetorically you merely grin and shake your head. “Fine, then I had best get some of the boys armed as well” he said “if only to protect the camp from wolves” you nod as Strabo leaves to go get organizing. You take another bite of your flat bread, it really was quite good, despite how simple it is.
