... should be ready in five." Matt doubted he could fool his mom into thinking he was sick, since he was already at the kitchen table, fully dressed and apparently ready to go, so he pushed himself away from the table and stood up. "I just have to brush my teeth."

"Okay," she gasped, still wiping the tears from her eyes. "What about you, Lily?"

"Give me about twenty minutes - I haven't put my makeup on yet," the girl replied.

"Makeup," Becky scoffed as Matt walked out of the kitchen and toward the stairs. "Mom didn't let me wear makeup until I graduated."

"That was only because you were dating Jason," Lily teased as Matt headed up the stairs, the rest of the conversation lost as he reached the top of the stairs. The bathroom was still empty, so he walked in and prepared his toothbrush, his mind wandering as he performed the automatic task. He remembered how he had known the secret of flight, at first riding along with the fly, but then taking control, flying around the room on his own. The fly had been mere instinct, bumping into walls and the window, but when Matt controlled it, he had been able to avoid crashing.

That thought led him to the next - was he limited to flies, or would he be able to jump into a more complex creature. A bird chirped at that moment, drawing his attention to the window. Even though he couldn't see the bird, he knew the chirp to be that of a robin, and suddenly he was outside the house, sitting on a branch and looking toward the house. He took flight, his wings flapping automatically, his tail feathers flicking instinctively to guide him in several circles, finally landing back on the branch. The moment he landed, his mind leapt back into his body, one that had just turned from the bathroom sink. He could still taste toothpaste in his mouth, and could remember brushing his teeth, but at the same time he could still feel the wind whipping through his feathers. Matt smiled as he walked down the stairs.

This was going to be an interesting day.

On their way out of the house, Matt brushed against Lily's arm, an in the normal course of events that wouldn't have phased him, but the fly and the bird were forefront in his mind, and the question of whether he could do the same with something more - complex. He focused his eyes on the back of her head, and suddenly he was walking through the doorway instead of standing in the kitchen, brushing his long hair behind his ear... or rather, her hair behind her ear. He turned around to watch his own body walking toward the doorway, and he smiled at himself, said "Excuse me," and walked past himself. Inside his sister's mind, he smirked. An interesting day indeed.
