At 4:30, Kate was nowhere to be found. I went to Joanne's office for my regular appointment. Susan and Joanne were sitting there.
"Hey," I said. "I looked for Kate,but couldn't find her. Is everything ok?"
"Yes," said Joanne. "Don't worry. I was just talking to Susan about this."
Susan said, "Kate came to me to say she needed a sick day, and so she went home. But I didn't know about what happened earlier -- if I had, I would have guessed she was just trying to get out of sex, and I wouldn't have let her go."
"It's ok," I said. "I think that was a lot for her to absorb."
"No, I don't agree," said Joanne. "The rules are very clearly defined. Susan, I think you should go talk to her at her house, and try to get her to see reason. James, I was wondering if you'd like to go with Susan, or stay here and use me. If you stay I thought I would call Leslie in."
I bit my lip. These were both good options.
