A few weeks later you are walking to the Wizard Chess Society when you pass by Professor MacGonagal's office. Inside the office is Ron, carefully sorting papers. You stop in.

"Hey Ron," you start "whatcha up to? Extra credit?"

Ron snorts, "I bloody wish. The Professor doesn't do extra credit. I am in detention."

You blink "What?! What did you do?"

"I ... I got caught sneaking around after curfew." He makes a face as if there was more to the story, but he doesn't elaborate. You shrug, figuring it's better not to push the issue.

"How long you in for?" You ask instead.

"Three Weeks, and fifty points from Gryffindor. All told we lost a hundred and fifty points." He gripes. You let out a low whistle.

"You, Harry and Hermione I take it?" You ask. He looks surprised and then sheepish. Finally he nods. "It figures," you chuckle. "Well, at least I know of a way that you can earn those house points back..."

He pauses. Looks to you, spies your chessboard, and grins. "Guess I have **** then, do I?"

"One hundred points," you shrug "could help you in the eyes of your house."

"Bloody Hell," he mutters. He thinks for a minute and then looks at you, "Checkmate, then. I suppose you've won me over."

You smile, wave, and head out to the Wizard Chess Society. You spend the entire club meeting poring through strategy manuals, and testing out feints and maneuvers in practice scenarios. If you are going to go into this tournament you intend to win, and Ron's entrance ensures that you have decent competition.
