Chapter 3 by TheControverser TheControverser

Does she enter the library or flee?

She enters the library.

With not a lot of time to make a choice, Eleanor slips inside the building and immediately looks around, not trying to take in the surroundings-- not yet anyway-- but rather looking for a suitable place to hide. She settles on a corner area with a large potted plant, hoping that she can pull it out in time and slip behind it.

The door she had entered through once again opened and a female voice was much louder this time. Eleanor caught a brief glimpse of her dark, curly hair in the doorway.

“There is a step here, be careful,” she offered.

“Ever my faithful companion,” a young male voice answered.

She got a brief glimpse of the second man, wearing some sort of shield over his eyes and had a thin staff in his hand that he would tap on the floor every few seconds. When the door shut and the room was completely dark, she could hear the tapping every few seconds.

It dawned on Eleanor that the man was sightless. She couldn't believe that anyone would choose to walk around without sight so the unhappy fact must be that this world, Ashton, lacked the technology to restore sight. If that was the case, they definitely lacked the technology to send her back home. She was stuck here for sure.

Suddenly, in the blink of an eye, the room lit up brightly and Eleanor realized she was more exposed than hidden. Luckily, the woman and man had not noticed her and she was guiding him towards a long table. They sat with their backs to her.

“Why on Earth did you choose now to come to the library?” the girl asked.

“Close your eyes, Megan, what do you hear?” he instructed.

“Nothing,” the woman responded.

“Exactly. Do you know how difficult it is to read braille? It's three times harder when you have noisy people all around you, chatting away,” the man said.

So far, the banter between them made very little sense. She was guessing that the building was used as some sort of place to read, yet she found no evidence of anything to read in the building. There were no holodisks, no viewing stations, and not to mention, how was a man with no sight going to read at all?

An even bigger mystery was the place the woman spoke of. Earth. Was that where she was right now or was the place called Ashton? Nothing seemed to make any sense about this place. It was like a world filled with chaos and people were left to their own devices more or less.

“You know what might be good?” the man asked his companion. “How about some coffee?”

“Now you are speaking my language! Can you get along without me?” she asked.

“Absolutely. You are only going to the diner, right? It's a block away. I'll be fine,” he assured her.

A few minutes later, the woman, Megan, left the building. Eleanor sighed with relief. The only other person in the room was the sightless man. She might actually come out of this undiscovered.

“She's gone!” the man calls out. “My name is Matt. What is your name?”

Eleanor's eyes widen. Was he talking to her? Was there someone else in the building? If he WAS talking to her, how did he even know she was there?

Does she answer or keep quiet?
