Chapter 21

What's next?

The language barrier

After you finished the dinner, it was coffee time, and Adriana's mother went to make it while you three cleared the table.

Then she asked something in Portuguese, and Adriana told you to go help her with the coffee machine since she didn't know how to make it work, using only the traditional moka at home in Brazil.

You didn't know where she keeps her stuff in the apartment, so making order on the table you were pretty useless anyway, and not discussing her request you just went into the kitchen.

There you realised teaching someone who doesn't speak more then a few words in English how to use something wasn't that easy: good thing Italian is a neolatin language too so she understood/guessed a bit of it.

Out of nowhere she asked me if you were serious with her daughter, because she had not seen her this much into somebody after the first marriage.

Great, the moment that every boyfriend fears, the girl's parent inquisition tribunal...Telling her that yes, you loved her with all of your life and you were not going to make her suffer again, was a challenge, not only for the language barrier but mostly because speaking openly about your feelings with anyone that isn't Adriana has never been your thing, at all. You don't know how you managed to survive that very embarrassing situation, but apparently it went well because her mother hugged you at the end of my twisted explanation and smiled.

You came back with the coffee for everyone, and Adriana looked at you with an interrogative expression, because it took you a lot more then you where supposed to, but you just made a rapid head nod and an half wink, that she correctly interpreted as a "never mind, everything is fine.

Before you could drink your coffee, she was already putting a spoon of honey inside, staring in your eyes with a cute and knowing smile: she was hinting to your stubbornness of drinking her strong blend of Brazilian coffee when she made it for you in Albany without sugar or other sweeteners, just because you wanted to prove your masculinity, and feeling like you drank liquid coal... She must really love you to endure your stubbornness and your terrible jokes too...
