Rise and Shine?
Clear Light of Day
"...stupid fucking East facing windows..." You grumble as the light streaming through your window rousts you from your deep sleep. Normally, you would have made sure to close the blinds before going to sleep, to avoid exactly this. But last night was anything but "normal." What you had planned to be a lazy Friday night in became a roller coaster of emotions. From seeing your best friend in deep pain from what that shit-heel Keith did to her, do watching her try to drink the pub dry herself, to getting into a huge row in a dark alley, with her screaming at you to fuck her, to finally getting taken too the police station to explain yourselves. Cap that off with a huge lightening storm terrifying Melody into a whimpering ball. Last night wasn't great.
But, it did have a pretty great highlight. To try and help her cope with the storm, you offered to let your best friend sleep in your bed, like you two had done when you were little kids. Wrapped up in your blankets and your arms, Melody fell asleep immediately, and slept through the pangs of lightening that you heard before you followed her into sleep. Despite everything that happened last night, the shit you both dealt with, you're confident you've never had a better night's sleep.
Melody...the smell of her hair still lingered on your pillow, but you couldn't feel her body on the sheets. She must have left the bed a while ago. You quickly get out of bed and get dressed, pausing to take a look outside. The dark foreboding clouds had finally lifted, leaving the skies impossibly blue. The entire campus looked brand new, fresh and clean from last night's storm.
Stepping out of the bedroom into the living area, you see Melody standing at the counter, pulling what you recognize as "Tommy's Special Breakfast Burritos" out of bag. The two of you shared the belief that the best way to cure a hangover is greasy food. And Tommy's is your normal go to for that particular cure. Normally, however, Melody well go for a large stack of pancakes with a side of bacon when she makes the call. Softly humming to herself as she plates the burritos and salsa, Melody is oblivious to your presence.
"Tommy's, huh? I thought those were proof that I had no sense of taste." A small part of you is disappointed when she doesn't jump at your voice breaking the silence of the room.
"First of all, Jack, there is plenty of proof you have no taste. But, after you put up with my liver pickling experiment last night, I figured I could afford you this one indulgence. This one, artery clogging, over-spiced, indulgence." The smile on her face as she turns around bears no malice, and it's great to see your friend really and truly smile again. That is, until she notices something over her shoulder, and her smile completely fades.
"Oh..." Is all the context you get from her, until you turn around yourself and see...
What's there?
