Chapter 9
by Mogue
Later that week
At Lab Syn
Stephan Gregor read the resume in his hand carefully. He knew that this lab was meant to do great things, and, as such, needed great employees to do the best work that it could possibly do. While students had plenty of recent fresh knowledge, they rarely had put it into much practice, and the work it took to train them up would detract from the work those students could otherwise be doing. He frowned. Was an internship really what the lab needed?
He also knew the lab's true purpose, as a development bed for designer recreational ****. **** that could maybe still fry the brain a little, but not so badly that the customers wouldn't be able to function in their normal lives. Or return for more. Additionally, he had begun experimenting with harder psychotropics, **** with mind-altering effects. Those were less for the Syndicate's everyday customer, and more for business operations. keeping the entertainment especially friendly or enforcers compliant was extremely valuable for the business, and to his boss. She had delivered the instructions to begin tests on the latter category herself. Either type of ****, the recreational or mind-altering, would be dangerous in the hands of an unprofessional student.
But the more he looked at the piece of paper between his hands, the more he saw a kindred spirit in this boy. He had grown up on the South side of town, like Stephan had. He had resisted the temptations and the easy decline into a criminal lifestyle those streets offered, like Stephan had, showing remarkable discipline. And lastly, this Mr. Sparrow had a stellar academic record. Stephan knew few people working in the new Lab Syn today with the kind of academic record this boy had developed.
There was the question of the brawl the boy had been involved in within the last week. Stephan didn't quite know what to think of it, after having his friend down at the sheriff's office run a quick background check. The fight had apparently been a quick one, and no charges were pressed. The aggressor had been reprimanded by the college just as Tony Sparrow had, both put on probation in lieu of any real punishment. Still, Stephan couldn't have any drama entering his lab. Too much was out stake for that.
Then again, it showed that Mr. Sparrow could handle himself. Not as useful in this corner of the business, but certainly belied a kind thinking on his feet that could be valuable. Stephan furrowed his brow.
What is his decision?
