Chapter 9 by A.Dent A.Dent

Who's the officer talking to?

You

Both you and Melody rise to follow the officer when he puts his hand out. "Sorry, Melody would you please go with Officer Sanders? She'll take your side of the story. Jack, follow me please."

"Of course Officer..." With a flash of embarrassing realization it occurs to you that you don't even know the officer's name. You've been too in your own head trying to make sense of this disastrous night. With a smile, he catches you trying to get a glimpse of his name on his uniform.

"Jones. C'mon, this way, we'll take the interrogation room while they have a conversation out here." Noticing you taking pause at "interrogation room", he adds quickly, "Nothing to worry about. There's not a ton of private spaces in here. I know my captain wouldn't be thrilled if I were to use his office again. Grab your coffee, this might take a bit."

The officer leads you down the hallway, and holds the door for you. As you get settled into your chairs across the table from each other, you cannot help that the room looks pretty much like the standard issue interrogation room from TV and movies. Right down to the large mirror, that you simply assumed could have people watching the room from the other side.

"Alright Jack, why don't you tell me what was happening out there? Why were the two of you yelling at each other in the rain?"

"I'm not entirely sure, Officer Jones. I've known Melody for a long time, I've never seen her in quite this state before." You then proceed to tell the story of how you and Melody grew up together, live together, practically do everything together. "But something happened tonight with her boyfriend, Keith. I wasn't ever able to get her to tell me the whole story. She just showed up at our place, much earlier than I expected. Tonight was supposed to be a big night for the two of them, I was half-expecting a marriage proposal given how excited she was for the date. From what she told me, the shit heel dumped her at the restaurant, dropped them bomb on her that he'd been cheating on her for months, and then tried to get her to join them for a goodbye threesome."

"Damn, that's cold." Jones remarked as he noted your story.

"I've always thought there was something off about the guy. Just never seemed to fully appreciate Melody. Anyway, so she ran out of the restaurant, and came home, getting completely soaked in the process. Opens the door, and tells me we're going drinking. She left very little room for debate. The whole walk to the bar she fought me on getting my umbrella. As if she was trying to punish herself or something. We got to O'Houlihan's, and she started trying to deplete their inventory, telling me the details between rounds of Guinness. By the time I was able to get her out of the bar she was three sheets to the wind. I was trying to get her home, so she could sleep it off, but between the loop Keith threw her for tonight and the ****, I guess she had it in her head that she was ugly or something." You paused to finish off your coffee. "She was saying that she needed me, or someone, to fuck her. I don't know, maybe to prove Keith wrong? Or prove she's pretty?" A sudden burst of anger has you crushing the paper cup in your hands, something Jones notices.

"That's right about where I came in. It was pretty obvious you were trying to look out for her, but why are you still so riled up? Sure she's your friend, but it seems like there is something else going on."

You sit there for a while, saying nothing, trying to find the way to vocalize your thoughts. "Melody is not only my friend and roommate. She's my BEST friend. We've been there for each other when even our own families let us down. She's smart, funny, and gorgeous. She has no clue how gorgeous she is. She keeps getting into relationships with guys who don't deserve her. Some of them were nice, but they were all oblivious to just amazing she is. I've harbored a crush on her for a long time, but the timing has never been right for us. If I am being completely honest with myself, a part of me really, really wanted to take her up on her offer tonight. But had I taken advantage of her, as drunk as she was, I would have destroyed our friendship. I'm not sure I would have ever been able to forgive myself..."

Finally verbalize these long bottled emotions has been cathartic for you. Officer Jones stood up out of his chair, "Okay Jack, thanks for talking with me. I know that couldn't have been easy. Let's go see if Sanders and Melody are ready, and I'll give you guys a ride home.

Left back out in the lobby you wait for a couple minutes, picking at a donut that would serve as decent hockey puck. You turn at the sound of a door opening, and see Officers Jones and Sanders with Melody. She's dried off a bit, but still is wearing your jacket, even though it is huge on her. Her eyeslooks like she's been crying again, but she no longer looks at you with the menacing glare you were getting before. Startling you and the officers, she quickly sprints towards you, launching herself into your arms. "I'm so sorry Jack!" That's as far as she gets before she starts blubbering into your shoulder."

"It's okay Melody. You know I could never stay mad at you. Let's go home and we can talk about this tomorrow." With that, you and Melody follow Officer Jones back out to his car. Even though it's still raining heavily, you cannot help but be sure that tomorrow is going to be a better day.

Time to head home?
