Hiding in the library

Sandry ducked further behind the bookcase as the door of the library opened again and several people walked in. She knew that staying where she was, only one row from the door, would get her discovered quickly, but the library was not especially big and there was only one exit.

She rounded the edge of the bookcase silently, moving further from the people who had entered, and wondered which section would be better to hide in- History or Geography? She tried to listen to their conversation to get a sense of what they had come in for, but they were not saying anything useful.

She pressed herself against another bookcase, breathing hard, chest heaving and straining against the old bra she wished she had not chosen this morning. Worse than the bra, though, were her panties- the lace trim coming off in places, the seat threadbare, and most humiliating was her name written in permanent black marker across the waist, a remnant of when she took them on a residential trip and did not want to lose any of her clothes. As she recalled, the girls she had shared the dorm with had mocked her at the time for having her name on her undies. Still, when Jasmine and Chloe had knocked their cases together while loading the bus and spilled their clothes onto the street, it would have saved an embarrassing time identifying their own underwear from the mess if they had done the same.

Sandry was jolted from her memory by the group of people getting closer, she moved away from the shelves and rounded the next bookcase, heading into Art History.

But a she got closer to the back of the library, she heard something new - books being handled, slid onto shelves. And she knew why she had not seen Miss Cohen, the librarian, at the desk by the door. Although she had to move to stay ahead of the students, each time she did it took her closer to being discovered by the librarian instead!
