After they broke apart, Lisa smiled and explained what the conversation with her sister had been about.   Carmen had been dating the man she was with, Joseph, for a while now.  (Martin was right to think this was not the man he had seen her with a year before.)   Lisa had walked in on them and found them partially undressed once, but they had not yet gone all the way, Carmen told her.    But they had gotten more serious, and had begun talking around having a future together.  Carmen had decided that Joseph would meet no resistance, but instead just eager cooperation with anything he wanted tonight.

   So what Carmen told her sister was that she would be going home with Joseph tonight, to spend the night in his bed, and that she wanted to check on whether Lisa would be all right about going home alone.

    "So would you be willing to wait with me on the bus stop?" she asked.  "I will be safe, I think, but it would be better to have someone with me - the stop near my apartment where I would get off is fine, I know."

   "Certainly," he replied.   "But I can drive you home in ten minutes."

   "That sounds better yet," she said.

   She and Martin danced more, and kissed under the trees outside.  Eventually the music stopped, and the couple helped close things down, to keep the evening going.

   At the end of that, Martin said to her, "Would you like to get something to eat?  There's a place on 28th Street that is open all night."

   "Yes," said Lisa.  "I'm not really very hungry, but a little something might be nice."

   The diner was nearly empty, in the lull between the last late theatre crowd and the noisy group when the bars closed.   They arrived at eleven-thirty and managed to stretch pie and coffee for an hour, with neither of them willing to call it a night.

   Martin, at least, wanted to end the night with Lisa beside him in bed, after having her spend some time under him there - or on top, if she wanted that instead.
