Chapter 18 by nbody95

How do you deal with Ryan?

Exile him

You look at Will's pained expression, and remember the decision you made barely more than a day earlier. You killed your cousin and four other people. You didn't have a choice then, you do now.

"We aren't going to kill him."

Both Ryan and Will heave a sigh of relief. Ryan has the audacity to laugh. "I knew you couldn't fucking-"

"If I were you I'd shut my fucking mouth, Ryan. Don't misinterpret my mercy as meaning you're getting off scott free."

Ryan scoffs at you and rolls his eyes, "Or what? You said yourself that if you take me back I'll make this whole thing look like your fault. You better have one hell of an offer for me to convince me not to sell you guys out when we get back to Alyssa."

The nerve of some people. You have a literal gun pointed at him and he still thinks he has the bargaining power.

"I don't think you understand me, Ryan. 'We' are not going back to camp. The minute you put your gun to my best friend's head, you forfeited all right to be a part of 'we'. Will and I can't trust you to come back with us alive, and I personally have no interest in killing one of the only 9 living people on this planet. So instead I'm just gonna fucking leave you here."

The news hits Ryan and Will like a bombshell. Now it's Will's turn to laugh.

"Dude, you're so fucked."

Ryan is significantly less amused. "You can't fucking do that. I don't have any food, supplies, nothing. I'll die out here. You're giving me a fucking **** sentence either way!"

"The pool beside you is good for drinking. Will already tested it. And if you're half as clever as you think you are, I'm sure you'll find a way to catch some fish or something to eat. Or maybe you won't, and you'll starve. I don't really care. I'm done with you."

"Yeah and what's to stop me from just coming back with you anyway?!"

"A fucking gun, dipshit."

"Two fucking guns, actually." Will adds, brandishing his weapon menacingly.

"You both already proved you won't do it, so I think I'll go ahead and walk back, thanks."

Will replies before you can, with a stunning coldness to his voice, "We don't have to kill you to keep you from walking back with us. We can just shoot you in the knee. Sure, you could probably drag yourself back anyway, but you won't make it back until well after night fall. That's a lot of grass you'd have to drag yourself through between here and there. I sure hope whatever ate that baby deer doesn't hunt at night. I imagine in the dark it can hide in a lot of places, even where the grass is short..."

Ryan's face is deathly pale. "P-please. Don't do this. I-I swear I won't fuck with you guys anymore."

"Too late, Ryan. That ship has crashed and burned." You smile at your own joke, and Will grins too. "When we return to camp, we'll tell them everything. You won't be there to defend yourself, so they'll have to believe us. Tomorrow, Will and I will finish surveying our surroundings. We'll start here at the pool. If we see you here, make no mistake, I will kill you. When I escaped the ship, there were six cryo-pods across from me that had malfunctioned. I only had time to save Will's. I let five people die right in front of me, including my own cousin, without even trying to save them. I killed those five people. I'm showing you mercy today, which, make no mistake, you do not deserve. I will not do so again. Come to the camp - you die. Hang around in any of the areas we explored today - you die. Stick around too long when you see me coming your way - you die. If I were you, I'd go as far away from here as possible."

"Please - "

"Have I made myself clear?"

"Will, Ben, please - "

"Have I made myself fucking clear?"

Ryan stares at the two of you, despair covering his face.

"He asked you a question."

Before you is the man that was your greatest threat this morning. Now, he is a broken man.

"I...I understand..."

You and Will pack up the remainder of your belongings without so much as another glance in Ryan's direction. You turn eastward, marching directly toward your camp. Behind you, you hear the sobs of your exiled companion, no longer giving any care to whether his enemies see him cry.

The journey home
