"Can't do anything more for me here, Dr. Breedlove told me," you say. "Got my leg stable, so it's time to hobble on home."

With the passenger seat leaned way back, Mary and a couple of hospital orderlies manage to get you settled. You've got a folding walker for when you get home. How many stairs up to the porch? Six? "Here's the schedule for physical therapy and occupational therapy," Dr. Breedlove says. "For occupational therapy, you should both come if you can."

"Both of us? Occupational therapy, ma'am?" Mary asks.

"That's about working with your husband's physical limitations around everyday tasks," Dr. Breedlove says. "Bathing, dressing, toileting..."

"Sex, Doctor," you chime in. "Don't forget sex."

"Yes, accommodations to sexual practices are part of occupational therapy," Dr. Breedlove says. She looks and sounds a little flustered.

"Thank you, Doctor," Mary says. "That's very modern." Your wife blinks, looking a little surprised.

"Hon, I can't put weight on that knee, so..." you say.

"Oh. I suppose we'll have to try something else then," Mary says, frowning a little.

"There's a booklet in your going-home packet with suggestions," Dr. Breedlove says.

"Why, thank you, Doctor," Mary says. "Bless you and thank you for taking good care of my man."

Everything's packed into the car, including Didyma Breedlove's panties tucked away in a zip-sealed plastic bag. You'd told the nurses that they were actually Mary's panties. They might be a skinch tight round the waist for Mary, but they weren't unbelievable as hers.

"Can you hit the drive-through on the way out of town?" you ask.

You and Mary have a nice place up in the hills, a double-wide on a big paved area, with a deck out back looking down the hillslope. Not far up in the hills, because Mary works in town, but far enough to play hell with cellphone signals.

"I'd say it reminds me of when we were courting," you say, holding the warm bag full of fried food. "But I guess courting wasn't the word for it."

"Oh, Brian," Mary says.

"You stole me off Mandy fair and square, and took me straight to bed," you say. "Bless you, hon. I've had a bad day now and then, but I've never had a bad month in my life since I've been with you."

"You stopped drinking, too," Mary says. "Mostly."

"Drunk in love with you, Mary," you say. "Twenty years, huh?"

"Twenty-two," Mary says. "And two girls in college."

You reminisce your way home, occasionally feeding Mary a french fry from the bag. It's a little struggle getting you up the stairs, but the walker actually helps.

"I'm so glad you're home, honeybear," Mary says. "I'm used to you being on the road, but in the hospital is like being in between things until they told me you'd be out today."

After lunch, you bring it right up. "Shall we look at that little booklet and see if we find anything interesting?" you say.

Mary smiles. "Well, this wasn't exactly how I was planning on welcoming you home, but yes, let's take a look."
