Chapter 5

How were Emily's skills?

She was interrupted

Just then, I heard the sound of the front door opening. “Shit, they’re back,” I whispered, pushing Emily off in a panic.

“Shit,” she said as she pushed me out of her bed, handed me back my pajama pants, and ushered me back to my room.

“You guys up yet?” Dad called up from the hallway.

Neither of us could keep a straight face at lunch – whenever I caught her eyes we’d both dissolve into fits of barely suppressed laughter, and after the fourth time Mom rolled her eyes. “Alright, what’s the joke, you two?”

“Nothing,” I sniggered.

“You wouldn’t get it, Mom,” Emily said, trying desperately not to smile. And failing.

“Hey, if you don’t want to tell me, that’s fine. Absolutely fine, I’m not feeling left out or anything. What about you, Derek, are you feeling left out?” she asked Dad with a small smirk growing on her lips.

Dad sighed exasperatedly. “Ignore her,” he said to us. “She just had Jillian talk her ear off for an hour.”

“I’m fine, Derek,” Mom said indignantly.

“Of course you are, darling,” he said without a trace of sarcasm.

Mom leaned in to Emily and murmured, “I want a divorce,” and Emily burst out laughing.

“No, you don’t,” Dad said, winking.

“No, I don’t,” Mom smiled, giving him a quick peck on the lips. “But sometimes …”

"Hey!" Dad laughed indignantly.

When did I next get a chance with Emily?
