Chapter 9
by bobbobbobthethir
How do you start your day tomorrow?
Get up early to study
You rub your eyes as you stumble out of bed, staring at your vibrating phone. It’s far too early to be up, but there’s work to be done.
After brushing your teeth, you change and then open up your course pages. There’s a large pile of assignments that are due sometime in the next week. You have five courses, each with homework - General Chemistry, Microeconomics, Intro to Psychology, a Writing Seminar, and Multivariate Calculus.
They were right. You really are a bit fucked, and you’re thankful that you decided to get some work in right now. Though you had some spare time in the hospital to get started on your readings for the Writing Seminar and Intro to Psych, and flipped through the first two chapters of the chemistry textbook, you haven’t had a chance to tackle the problem sets just yet. Noticing that the Calculus assignment will be due in class today, you decide to work on that first, and take a first stab at the problems.
However, they’re all about set theory or some rubbish like that, and the questions make no sense to you.
You flip through a textbook that you bought just before being rushed to the hospital, and while things start to connect in your head, you still have no idea what this talk about the properties of sets has to do with multivariable calculus of all things. Missing a week of class has probably made things much harder than it need be.
You decide that you need food in your system, so you head out for breakfast, swiping into the dining hall and toasting a bagel. Still half asleep, you grab some orange juice, and then head for the seats, looking for a familiar face.
Luckily, you spot the Asian girl from yesterday - Christina - sitting at a table by herself, working on homework with an empty plate beside her.
“What are you working on?” you ask, sitting down.
“Just a couple problems for multivariable calc,” she says. “They’re assigning us proofs for some god-damned reason, and I’ve been procrastinating so… well, class is two hours and a bit.”
“Oh, you have multivariable next too! Have you got Luck for your prof?” you ask.
“Yeah!” Christina says. “Did you finish the homework? We can compare answers…”
“Actually, I got up early to work on the homework,” you say, “because I’ve barely started on it. Want to finish it up together now?”
“Sure,” she says, and the two of you get to work. It turns out that, despite having actually attended class, Christina doesn’t have a much better grasp of the material than you, and it takes you the better part of two hours before you finally finish, even having copied the first half from Christina’s solutions.
With that, you look at the clock and realise that it’s time to get to class, so you rush out the dining hall - which has now filled up considerably - and head for class with Christina.
Christina +5
