Lorelei grumbles and complains, railing against fate, as you work the jack to lift up the corner of her car. Now and then you tell her to do something to interrupt the flow of complaints of injustice and ill use.

When you've finally gotten things changed out, Lorelei's spirits rise enough to thank you and give you a grateful smile.

"Happy to be your guardian angel," you say. "I don't mind a little hard work."

Years at the diner slinging plates have left you with stronger arms and shoulders than the average woman, so the lug wrench and the car jack were not hard to operate.

Lorelei drops you at the nail salon. You greet Darla and ask where you can wash your hands and face.

"Still a little sticky out there to be exercising," you tell Darla. "Let me know if I'm still in the realm of decency."

Darla laughs. "You're fine," she says. "Sit right down and we can get started on your fingers."

You draw Darla out on her near-miss experiences with women at The Crater. "I did dance with a few ladies there," she says. "Just for fun. While Lorelei was trying to make time with her latest. But a couple, you know, with my man away, I might have said yes, but I was Lorelei's bar buddy and I couldn't just run off without her."

"My honeybear, Brian, he's fine with me stepping out a little when he's out of town," you say. "He's a long-haul trucker. Just wants to hear about it when he gets home." Your face feels a little warm. "I was ashamed at first, but he told me right back to my face what I'd told him, God loves love, Mary, that's what he said. God loves love and I love you and just take care of yourself and tell me."

"My, my, my," Darla says. "So he's fine with you stepping out with the ladies when he's on the road?"

"I cannot tell a lie, Darla," you say. "Not just ladies, but gentlemen. It's a comfort that my man knows and that he loves me all the same."

Darla tilts her head and gives you a crooked smile. "Were you trying to pick up a gentleman today, Mary?" she asks.

"I must confess that is so, Darla," you say. "I start thinking that my man's going to be back in a few days, and I start wishing he was home already. How about yourself? How do you take care of feeling that way when your man's gone so long?"

Now it's Darla's turn to blush. "Phone sex," she says. "They let him have a private room to call me up over the Internet. But it's not like having him home."

"What's your favorite way to be together?" you ask Darla.

You manage to tease out of her that her man likes Darla to ride him in bed, but he's got a thing about doing it in every room, usually standing behind Darla with her bent forward over a counter, table, couch, or against the wall.

"You feeling it today?" you ask. "Him being gone?"

"A little," Darla says. "Well, a lot, really."

"You want any company?" you ask. "Go out and dance, maybe? Missing a loving touch?"
