Chapter 29 by Westwall Westwall

Defenceless.

Maintenance of the Elevator

Marie had just discovered the location of the problem, and was heading there with Nicholas staying close behind. Her plasma sword was held close to her as they moved to the elevator's controls. Both were quiet as the ship moaned and creaked in the background. Once they arrived, Marie noticed the terrible damage to the cabin itself. The controls were completely busted, and the uplink computer was badly damaged. Approaching the uplink terminal, Marie entrusted her sword to Nicholas while she connected her suit to the damaged machine. Terminals had various amounts of data inside of them that could be manipulated, even when terribly damaged. Even still, this meant Marie would be here a lot longer then she had hoped. Working on the internals of the terminal, Marie looked up to see Nicholas standing guard.

Once she had bypassed a lot of the major issues, Marie realized something quite troubling. The shaft itself had been damaged, and the elevator would need to be swapped out for a fresh one. Most of the elevators in the Henkan were motorized and swapping them out was actually quite easy. Each shaft had a small cabin at the bottom where a fresh elevator could be swapped so the damaged one could be worked on. However, this process took a bit of time and was quite noisy. There would be no doubt that the monsters of the ship would hear it and want to investigate.

Biting her lip, Marie looked at Nicholas with an uneasy smile. "Well, we can replace the cabin to the elevator easily enough. However, its going to make some serious noise in the meantime..." Her voice trailed off and Nicholas knew what that meant. The monsters would come crawling out of the vents, and they would need to defend themselves for a short time. Shrugging, either due to impatience or simple indifference to their fate, Nicholas nodded in reply. Marie looked back to the workstation, plugged in a few codes, and the machine churned to life.

Sure enough, the machine was quite loud as its gears and internals moved and clicked. The noise filled the small maintenance room they were in, and the cabin slowly moved away from position. Inhuman roars could be heard in the distance, as the creatures that inhabited the ship converged on their location. Within seconds, nearby vents exploded outwards, and the monsters appeared. Some slashers and a few leapers seemed to appear out of thin air, and they attacked with a serious viciousness. Armed with her plasma sword, Marie cried war and rushed forward, her blade striking true as she completely bisected one monster. Nicholas stood close by with his pistol, his eyes darting back and forth.

Does Nicholas help?
