Chapter 25

CrocodileHAZARD
What does she decide? Will she follow you as you retrace your steps? Or does she decide on something else?
She cautiously accepts the offer.
It’s clear that she does not trust you as far as she can (physically) throw you. Still, whatever war she’s at with herself appears to have calmed down since she appears to be seriously considering the repercussions of judging you guilty too early.
“Alright, fine. I’ll play along. For now.”
The threat behind the words is unspoken, but clear all the same.
Making sure that you are always in front of her and never make any sudden moves, you spend the next hour and a half going through your day since encountering the Titans. Luckily, your eventful day with Plasmus and the motel robbery is still fresh on many people’s minds. With that, the most important bits of your story are confirmed.
Though you honestly kind of wanted to slug that one guy who claimed that you “ravaged” the pizza serving girl you saved from Plasmus after leaving the area. The sad part is, you’re not sure if you want to hit him because he lied, or because you wish it had actually happened.
Still, other than the stink-eye Raven gave you, there’s nothing to indicate her thoughts. She is definitely a pro at keeping her emotions in check, or at least not visible. Granted, having her hood drawn up helps, but still.
Eventually, your path takes you to your motel room. Should it bear repeating, it was certainly NOT worth the price of admission. But since you basically got the upgrade for free, it’s hard to complain when it’s honestly decent enough.
She is, of course, thoroughly unimpressed. But its not like you brought her there to impress her.
“So,” she starts off. “It…looks like you were telling the truth.”
The way she says it makes it sound like she’s unsure if she’s meant to apologize or not. You don’t particularly care either way to be honest.
“So since I cleared up that little misunderstanding, perhaps you could clear something up for me?”
She tenses at your request, having a good idea of what you mean to ask.
“You want to know about what happened back there…with Light…”
“If I’m not overstepping,” you offer.
She clearly wants to take you up on the out you gave her, but she just takes a deep breath, lets out a sigh, and starts seriously considering whether or not to tell you.
It feels like an hour, but in about ten minutes she’s ready to answer you.
“My powers,” she begins, “aren’t the most stable. Ever since I was little, I’ve always lost control when I let my emotions run wild. Anger was especially dangerous. There is…something in me that makes me different, even from my home.”
It takes a lot for her to bring herself to tell you even that much, so you do not rush her when she takes a few minutes to recollect herself.
“My…father, was not a good man. Hell, he’s not even a man. He’s a plague, a bad omen. And as his daughter, I’ve always had his stigma attached to me growing up. Mom tried, but I don’t think she could ever fully see past what happened between her and my father whenever she looked at me.
“Eventually, I couldn’t keep suppressing my emotions. Not as easily, anyway. Not until I decided to leave. Joining the others, having friends for the first time in my life. There’s not many experiences here that haven’t been a first for me. But even then, I can’t ever truly let myself go. I’m always meditating to keep myself in control. But during that fight, Light got to me. And a lifetime of anger and bitterness just…swallowed me up in that moment. I didn’t even realize what I was doing until Robin called out to me.”
She’s clearly upset, but trying to hide it. She’s not doing a good job of it, but you’re not so callous as to point that out.
“I’m probably the last one you want to ask for help, but is there any way I can help?” you offer.
She’s shocked by your suggestion. You have several similarities with her regarding your powers. Early on, it was utter chaos for you to control them, and it took years before you managed to rid yourself of activating something outside of combat without intending to. While they’ve always stuck to the shallow end of space/time manipulation, your powers and abilities are still deadly enough that dropping you in the middle of a city back then was almost synonymous with dropping a nuke.
So yeah, you could sympathize with her. Fuck anyone who couldn’t get that.
Raven’s expression tries to return to its usual neutral setting, but she’s clearly showing conflict in her eyes. It’s no shock really. After all, she’s never really opened up to anyone about her problems until now. If it had been one of the other Titans, she might have been more receptive of the offer. But you were still technically an unknown. A lifetime of caution still told her that you could be biding your time and waiting for the right moment. Underneath all that though is a human being who just desperately wants to feel connected with someone else.
Perhaps she avoided telling the other Titans because of the risk there’d be in losing their friendship. At least with you, there was no expectation one way or the other. But if she accepted your offer, then there’d have to be something else there, right? Not just anyone would offer to help a stranger (or brief acquaintance at least) with a deep rooted problem like hers.
Will Raven accept your offer? Reject it? Or does she need time to consider it?
