Chapter 8

How do you respond?
Fall asleep
My fingers hovered over the keyboard. What do you say to that?
I love you and I want your children?
Marry me?
No. That’s just the hormones numbing my brain. C’mon, I can think of something.
My eyelids started to become heavy as my head rolled to the side.
I awoke to banging on my door. I opened my eyes and immediately winced as the light that was flooding my room through my open curtains entered my eyes. I looked down at my naked body and remembered last light.
Will I ever experience something like that again?
The banging on the door continued.
“Ella! Zach made breakfast, you coming down or what?” shouted Megan.
“Uh, yeah give me a sec” I shouted back.
I sat up and rubbed my eyes. What a night. I swivelled my legs around and placed my feet on the floor. I felt something cold under my left foot.
Shit! My phone! I can’t afford to get a new screen for that if I’m paying fencing fees.
I leant down and picked it up. It was still in once piece luckily. I hit unlock and looked up at the flashing battery icon. Fuck, I forgot to charge it last night. I grabbed the charger cable from my desk and plugged it in. It was only then I realised what was on the screen.
The text message! Oh my god, I never responded. He can see I read the message! Oh fuck what am I going to do?
My heart was racing, I could feel my pulse in my ears.
Do I apologise? Pretend I didn’t read it? I got hacked? Don’t respond at all?
Calm the fuck down Ella, it’s just a text. He’ll understand if I tell him the truth. Right?
To: John Doe
Hi! Sorry, fell asleep replying to you last night. Really glad I came too. Thanks for taking care of me.
Heh, glad I came in two ways last night. I thought to myself, looking down at my vibrator.
Right, I need to go eat before my housemates start hating me.
I quickly threw on a t-shirt with a loose pair of shorts and headed downstairs.
“About time you came down. Your foods getting cold!” said Megan
“Sorry, I got distracted. Thanks for cooking Zach.”
“No worries.”
I took a seat at the table. There was bacon, eggs, toast and beans. Just what I needed. I started shovelling everything I could onto my plate. I hadn’t realised how hungry I was when I first woke up.
“So, who’s the boy?”
I paused mid scoop and looked up at Megan.
“And don’t try and deny it. We had our window open, we heard everything.”
Curse them for getting the front room.
I sat back down on my seat and looked at my food.
“Just someone I met at fencing. Nothing more”
My face must of given it away.
"Was he cute?"
“I only met him last night, what are you saying?”
“C’mon, give us the deets!”
“We spoke at training, then a few of us went to the pub. He offered to walk me home. Nothing else happened!”
She must have heard the tension in my voice because she didn’t press me further.
We ate in silence for a bit until Zach spoke up.
“We're heading into town later to do some shopping. You want to come with us?”
Today was Friday, final weekday of freshers. I still had a bit of work to polish up but that could wait until the weekend. I could do with grabbing some things, but shopping has never been my favourite. Will things be awkward with Megan?
What do you do today?
