Chapter 21 by cdbaby cdbaby

What happens after dinner?

The arc of love

Sarah put on her apron as she had done many times before. "What?" Jill was smiling at her. "Oh nothing, Susie Homemaker." Jill teased Sarah for the flowery apron she wore. "Oh shut up!" Sarah laughed and bumped her with her shoulder. Her mother told the girls what to make and they set out making the food.

In their small apartment Sarah made christmas dinner while Jill played with a baby in the living room. Her father and mother both sat with Jill playing with their grandchild. Her father looked at her from the living room smiled and said "You're gonna burn."

"What?!" Sarah snapped back she had been staring at Jill for a long time as she read something on her phone. "You're gonna burn the cookies." Jill grabbed the oven mitts and pulled the cookies out. "Sorry I was lost in thought." "Must have been some thought you were gone for awhile." "It was." Sarah whispered leaving the kitchen and finding her mother in the living room. "Mom can we talk?" "Sure sweetie." she said adjusting herself on the couch. "I-in private?" Leslie stood and followed Sarah to her old room.

"What's the problem?" Sarah sat on her big soft bed next to her mother. "How did you know you loved daddy?" "Is this about someone at school?" "Yes." That was close enough to the truth. "Well he was very sweet and he went out of his way to make me smile. This one time we were on the ferris wheel and he didn't know I was afraid of heights until then so to calm me down he would tell me funny stories until we were back on the ground." Her mom had a dreamy look in her eyes as she remembered the best night of her life. "Yeah but were you scared?" "Of course, I still hate ferris wheels but it's still sweet." "No, I mean were you scared to go out with daddy?" Her mother nodded seeming to understand what Sarah was talking about. "Of course offering your heart to someone is always scary there are so many ways it can go wrong." Sarah frowned. "But when it goes right nothing in life will make you happier." She kissed Sarah's head. "Until you have kids that is." Sarah rolled her eyes and smiled. There was a knock on the door "Sarah?" it was Jill. "Come in." "Dinner's ready." Sarah's heart skipped a beat as it always did when she saw Jill and she wondered if she'd ever get used to it, or if she wanted too. "We'll be right down." Sarah took off her apron and adjusted her dress in the mirror hanging against her door. "What?" she asked looking back at her mother. "Nothing. Come on, I'm anxious to see how well you girls did."

Sarah exited her room just in time to see her sister coming home. Both squealed with delight and raced into each others arms in a big hug talking ninety to nothing about how much they missed one another and how much they've changed since they saw each other last.
