The end of a long first day

At the end of their first day on the wards, the nurse trainees are looking a little wilted.

"Thanks, Ms. Bates," Olivia says. She accepts the chilled can of soda with a smile. Her fingers linger on the side of your hand for a beat. Olivia joins the others on the benches of the changing room. Brenda Box has managed to get one of the smaller changing rooms near the Health Education department dedicated for the trainees' use.

You look over the trainees. "So how's everyone feeling?" you ask. Anna, Dot, Jennifer, Kelly, Margarita and Olivia look back at you.

"Happy to get started," Kelly says. She seems to be one of the fresher ones.

"Made some new friends," Jennifer says. She and Kelly were starting on Labor and Delivery.

"Good," Dot says. She looks a little fatigued. She and Anna started with the Emergency department. Anna, in turn, gives a cool nod.

"Good start," Olivia says. "Uh-huh," Margarita confirms. The two of them had been working in Occupational Therapy, helping prepare patients for discharge and recovery. They looked happy but definitely tired.

"What were the hardest things today?" you ask.

Dot laughs. "Getting lost. Twice. Working out how the elevators work."

Anna says, "The supplies weren't where they were supposed to be. If it hadn't been a slow day, it might have been bad for the emergency patients."

Olivia says, "Pacing myself. O.T. really kept me hopping."

"Uh-huh," Margarita says. "A lot to learn and a lot to do at the same time."

Kelly swallows. "Freezing up doing a gyno exam," she says.

"You got over it," Jennifer says. "You'll be fine." She shrugs. "For me it was getting my ankle banged by a swinging door."

"Ow," Kelly says. "I missed that. I didn't notice, were you limping?"

"No, it hurt a lot but it felt better soon," Jennifer says.

"Any other questions?" you ask.

Jennifer pops her hand up. "Are you gonna keep eating us out, Ms. Bates, or was that just the welcome party?"

You feel warm under your collar, but you don't think you're showing it in your face. You're a little surprised. You expected it might be Olivia who would be more forward with you, rather than Jennifer.

"Whooh, Jen!" Kelly says, surprised. She blinks her bright blue eyes.

"Well, I liked it when Ms. Bates ate me out," Jennifer says. "I loved watching the rest of you get off. You screamers, Marg and Anna. Dot with her fuck-fuck motormouth. Kelly grinding back on her first tongue. And Olivia coming so hard she fell off the bed."

Dot blushes bright pink behind her freckles. Margarita grins. Olivia has an amused look. Anna keeps her eyes on you, giving you a cool, intent glance.

Time for you to set the tone for this group of nursing trainees. It might be good to keep things from getting too crazy at work. After all, these six deserved a good grounding in their professional skills. Jennifer especially, who's on the Nurse Practitioner track.

"Well, Jennifer," you say. "Making sure that all of you have good professional experiences during your trainee term at the hospital is my first priority. I'm glad you all enjoyed the welcome event that Brenda put together."

What do you tell the nurse trainees?

• Cool it for now: "And if you work and learn hard, you can look forward to a farewell party." Describe the scene and make another Move, maybe catching up with Brenda while the trainees get their term started.
• Keep it discreet: "But you understand that the hospital is a workplace, and not a place to be caught partying on shift." Check in later in the week for how they're settling in.
