Chapter 11

Is her sleep disturbed or does she make it through the night unscathed?
Nightly visitor
Lara was awoken by a sharp scream, and soon realised were it was originating from; a stain of blood could be seen inside the now opened window.
Her little contraption had worked perfectly, and whoever it was that had entered her room had found himself stabbed by one of her knives, having been set up as part of a trip-wire trap.
Whoever it had been, it seemed as though he had fled again.
But then again, he could be another invisible bastard.
Lara slid out of bed, grabbing the gun she had taped onto the undercarriage of her bed.
If the prowler was still nearby, he would probably be drooling by now, for Lara slept dressed in a sheer black thong, and nothing more.
Moving slowly through her room, Lara kept her senses high, waiting for the slightest sign of movement.
Then, she heard it. A trickle of fluid hitting the wooden floorboard.
Reacting instantly, Lara fired a shot in the direction the sound had been coming from.
The deafening roar of her gun was followed by a sigh and a thump as something heavy hit the floor, and blood began to leak onto the wooden boards.
After a few more seconds, a figure began to materialize itself on the floor.
It was a man dressed in black, Lara could make out.
Approaching him carefully, Lara saw that her shot had caught him in the chest, tearing a hole straight through.
Crouching down next to him, Lara used her free hand to see if the man was still alive.
No pulse, damn!
Now, she could hear movements throughout the tavern, since they must of course have noticed the shot.
Realising that this was the sort of thing that would bring her into contact with the corrupt “justice” system, Lara decided that running was a hell of a lot better than valour.
Plus, now the Hand knew where to find her.
So, not bothering to waste valuable time getting dressed, Lara grabbed her bags, one slung over her back, and climbed out the window.
As she dropped the bag in her left hand down to the ground, she could hear the door behind her open, and someone scream as he hit the trip-wire Lara had set up.
Bracing herself first, Lara then swung her legs over the windowsill and jumped out into the darkness.
Landing on her feet on the soft, dusty ground, Lara immediately looked around to see if anyone was present.
Nothing could be seen, but someone, for instance a partner of the intruder, could be waiting for her in the dark.
From above, she could hear screams after her as someone looked out the window, but Lara had already grabbed her bags, and had begun running silently through the night.
