To the Ballroom

Bill and Scarlett took the elevator up to the prom. No one was in there with them. "Show time," Scarlett whispered into Bill's ear.

The elevator doors opened to the prom. It was beautiful. Bill had long wished to have someone to bring to it. A few of his nerdy friends had already gotten dates. They were all equally smart and looked out of place compared to the jocky and preppy students.

His best friend Matt had disheveled hair like usual and his black rim glasses. Next to him was Ginny who was wearing a nice green dress, but her hair was tied into a ponytail and she wore her glasses as well. By comparison Bill and Scarlett seemed over dressed.

The conversations were interesting. Scarlett introduced herself as a home schooled girl that Bill tutored. Everyone seemed to agree to what she said. They knew Bill and it sounded like something he would do. Matt on the other hand kept checking to see if she was made of metal.

"There is no way you got a girl like that," Matt said to Bill in private.

"What are you saying?" Bill said, "That I accidentally turned a man into a woman so that I could have date to prom? That would be to sci-fi."

"I guess that would be a bit out there..." Matt said dropping the accusation; mainly because it was silly, but mostly because he was now afraid Bill would turn him into a woman.

Scarlett was navigating conversations very well. Pretending to be a home schooler allowed her to be oblivious to pop culture though she did enjoy talking about fashion and makeup tips. Bill wondered what his mother did to her to get her so interested in such things.

When the dancing started Scarlett lead Bill to the dance floor. It was surreal to Bill to be dancing with Scarlett as though she were the only woman in the room. During some of the more club dance songs they stood far apart just jumping up and down. Then the slow dance song began, Scarlett grabbed Bill's hand and placed it on her hip. Bill hesitated.

"Please, Bill," Scarlett said looking deep into his eyes.

Bill conceded, he could not deny the longing in her eyes. He felt pleasure run up his arm as he placed his hands on her. The music picked up and they glided across the dance floor. Scarlett let Bill lead, he had taken dance classes because of his mother and they were finally panning out.

When the music stopped Scarlett and Bill were face to face with each other. Scarlett's lips quivered with anticipation, but Bill didn't follow through. In silence they say back down Bill trying to figure out his emotions.

Then the Prom King and Queen ceremony took place. Ms. Green and Mr. Davis got on stage and started bantering, Bill could swear they looked like they had just run a marathon or something.

"And now the moment you all have been waiting for," Ms. Green said, "Prom King and Queen are Bill and his date Scarlett!"

Bill sat in shock, but Scarlett squeeled like a little girl.

"We rigged the vote," Ginny whispered.

Scarlett dragged Bill onto the stage. The crowns and sashes were ceremoniously placed. Scarlett looked as though she was about to cry.

They danced together in a slow waltz. The fuzzy feeling deep inside Bill's chest took hold towards the end. He dipped Scarlett into a deep and passionate kiss. And she kissed back...
