Chapter 17 by reaper13
How does Taylor deal with her possible pregnancy?
She asks her sister for advice
Taylor has never been too close with her big sister, but also not that distant. She is three years older so it is more an age difference thing rather than just not getting along.
She is not quite fond of telling her sister she just had her sexual awakening, but if she is clever maybe she can get some information on anti-conception out of her.
Taylor knocks on the door to her sister’s room.
“Come in!” Taylor hears her sister yell.
She opens the door and walks into her sister’s room. She sees her big sis sitting on her bed painting her toenails.
“Hi, Cynthia.” Taylor says.
“Hey, Taylor.” Cynthia says. “What’s up?”
“Well, there’s a rumor going around in school.” Taylor lies. “Supposedly there’s this girl who had sex with her boyfriend during a risky time. They used a condom but it broke. Now there’s a buzz about her maybe being pregnant.”
“Oh man.” Cynthia groans while keeping her focus on her toes. “Here she goes having sex in a responsible way and along comes a badly made condom to ruin it all.”
Taylor sits in front of her big sis on her bed and asks, “You’re not bothered by someone my age having sex?”
Cynthia shrugs and says, “She’s 18, right? That means she hit the legal age. She can have sex if she wants to. What about you, have you thought about it?”
“Uhm, no, I just … fantasize about boys for now.” Taylor says, looking away and hoping Cynthia won’t notice her blushing.
“So if your dream boy comes along you’d let him have you?” Cynthia asks.
“You’re getting off topic, sis.” Taylor says annoyed. “Let’s get to this girl unlucky girl in my school.”
Cynthia shrugs again and says, “Sure … though I wouldn’t blame you if you did, it’s normal.”
“Whatever,” Taylor says with a sigh. “So I was wondering. How long does this girl have to wait until she does a pregnancy test? A day, a week?”
“Why are you so curious about that?” Cynthia asks, “It’s not like you are pregnant, right?”
“No …” Taylor says. “But like you said, I’m 18. So are all my friends. Whether we like it or not, our sexuality will be developing. Just because it happened to this girl doesn’t mean she’s the exception. It could happen to any girl … in the future. If it happens to a friend of mine, I just want to be able to give her the information she needs.”
Having finished painting her nails, Cynthia puts her nail polish away and finally starts looking at her little sister.
“Well there used to be a planned parenthood in the city. The girl you’re taking about could have gone there for a pregnancy test, possibly also an STD test, you know, just to be sure. And it would be pretty cheap. Sadly they had their budged slashed and had to close.”
_“Damn.” Taylor thinks. “I could have gotten an anonymous test over there. Stupid politicians.”
“There’s also a urine test, but that is less reliable than a blood test.” Cynthia continues.
“And can you do that immediately?” Taylor wonders.
“No,” Cynthia says. “You have to wait at least 14 days after conception to have a reliable result. If the girl you’re talking about had her accident yesterday she’ll have to wait 2 weeks for such a test. If she does it now, they test may come out negative even though she’s pregnant anyways.”
“Two weeks, I don’t think I can wait that long.”_ Taylor thinks.
Suddenly Cynthia’s phone starts ringing. Taylor’s big sister grabs her phone and checks who it is.
“It’s a friend from university.” She says. “Sorry, I gotta take this.”
“No problem. Thanks for the talk.” Taylor says.
Cynthia then answers her phone and says, “Hey, Aïsha. How are you?”
Taylor gets up and walks out of her sister’s room. As she does so, she overhears part of the conversation Cynthia has with her friend.
“I’m not against diversity, Aïsha. But I’m not quite fond about this whole ‘white girl Wednesday’ thing.”
“Oh, so it’s not just for white girls? Hmm, I don’t know.”
“Well, of course ‘you’ would join …”
Taylor then closes the door, making it impossible to further listen in.
Taylor heads back to her room and lies on her bed.
“Two weeks.” She sighs. “I need to wait two full weeks before I can even test if I either have Thomas’s baby or not.”
Taylor sits up and pulls up her shirt to look at her flat black belly. She does care about Thomas. If she was just a bit older. If she had already finished school. If she had been together with Thomas a bit longer. She might be happy with the possibility of having his baby inside her. But not like this.
What does Taylor do next?
