You'll be out from underfoot in the hospital, so Maggie, the nursing director, doesn't have to keep an eye on you. It'll be refreshing to work with bright young things. You wonder how many are going to be men. It's always a minority -- they more often become technicians or specialty therapists than nurses -- but there are often a few.

No men in the last trainee cohort, though. You suppose Brenda's sorority and women's college connections may have filled up all the openings before any fellows had a chance to get in.

"That's not actually true," you tell Julie.

"You?" Julie asks.

You nod. "She was hitting on me hard," you say. "I said yes. She was soaked before I touched her."

"I guess Brenda just doesn't like me, then," Julie says.

"Maybe not that way," you say.

"Or she's a snob," Julie says.

You say, "Or it wasn't the right occasion." You look round and don't see anyone nearby. "I did hear she has slumber parties for the new trainees at her house."

"Oh, well, then, that's different," Julie says, not sounding convinced.

"We should review our first assignment," you say.

"All right," Julie says. "Coffee in the cafeteria?"

"We're not on shift, we could go anywhere," you say.

"How about The Crater?" Julie asks.

"But that's a lesbian bar," you protest.

Julie rolls her eyes at you. "Gloria," she says. "You ARE a lesbian."

"Oh," you say. "Not culturally, though."

Julie laughs out loud. "C'mon, we'll fix that." she says, dragging you toward the elevator.
