Chapter 41 by reaper13

Who is the representative of the opposition?

It’s Johnathan

Eve, Michael and Sally are waiting in the conference room. The representative of the opposition is late. This is quite unlike James. In the past he was always among the first to arrive. Why the sudden change?
Then the door opens and a white guy other than James comes in.
“Sorry for being late.” The strange guy says, “I’m afraid James won’t be representing the opposition any more. My name is Johnathan.”
“Welcome Johnathan.” Eve says, “I take it you will now represent the opposition.”
“Indeed I will.” Johnathan confirms as he takes a chair and sits down. “Someone has to keep our girls safe from these niggers.”
Michael notices the n-word Johnathan uses and, clearly offended, says “I beg your pardon.”
Eve turns to Michael and says, “Michael, calm down.” Then she turns to Johnathan and says, “Johnathan, the reason the opposition can send a representative is so that I could hear the ailments of every student, including those I do not agree with. But if you continue to engage in racist talk like that you will no longer be welcome and the opposition will lose its voice on this table.”
Johnathan shrugs and says, “What? I’m not at liberty to say what I want? I’m not sure if you are aware, but this is a free country, Eve. You do know about the first amendment right?”
Michael gets ready to speak up, but Eve raises her hand. Michael then stays silent and lets Eve continue.
“Congress shall make no law either respecting an establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech or the press; or the right of the people to peacefully assemble.” Eve states.
Johnathan look at Michael with a smirk and says, “See, I can say what I want.”
“The first word … ‘congress.” Eve says. “Hence the 1st amendment applies only to the government, not the student council. If I want, I can have you thrown out because I find your words too offensive and your first amendment right will not have been infringed on.”
“Figures.” Johnathan says. “A social justice warrior like you would feel too offended when I speak my mind, right?”
“Well I could just permit Michael and Sally to start using racist slangs directed towards white people as well. There are numerous ones. Cracker, ghoul, gringo, redneck, hick, pastyface …”
The more slurs against whites Eve brings up, the more uncomfortable Johnathan becomes.
“What’s wrong, Johnathan.” Eve says, having noticed the guys growing discomfort. “You’re not one of those social justice warriors who gets triggered by racial slurs, are you? Or would it perhaps be best if we leave all racism out of this room. You don’t use any against Michael, and Michael in turn doesn’t use any against you. I’m just providing an equal playing field. Either none of you use racist slurs, or both of you do.”
Johnathan mulls over Eve’s suggestion then says, “Fine, no slurs within this room.”

Oh boy, Eve never had such issues with James. But with it settled the meeting can finally begin.
“Right, I take it you all have informed yourselves about the results of the referendum.” Eve begins.
“Those have been frauded.” Johnathan immediately counters.
“Excuse me?” Eve asks.
“Everybody knows the student council want to promote the mandate. I have testimonies from people who saw you replace no votes with yes notes to change the outcome of the vote.” Johnathan says.
Eve can’t believe what she is hearing. This guy must be mental.
“If we really did that, why on earth would we stop 363 votes short of a victory?” Eve asks.
“Johnathan shrugs and says, “You miscounted.”
“And who are those people who say that?” Sally asks.
“Sorry,” Johnathan says, “They want to remain anonymous.”
Sally rolls her eyes and sighs saying, “But of course they do.”
Eve rubs her forehead and says, “Would you be comfortable if you can have three members of your group supervising the counting?”
“You can’t be serious.” Michael interjects.
“I want ten guys.” Johnathan counters.
“Three or none, Johnathan.” Eve says.
“No, I want ten.” Johnathan repeats.
Eve sighs and says, “Alright then, none.”
“See,” Johnathan replies. “Next referendum will be another fraud, just like this one.”
“I offered you three, Johnathan.” Eve says with an angry look. “Your refusal to accept resulted in you not having supervision. You will accept and have your three guys, or you won’t have anyone and have yourself to blame for it.”
Johnathan looks angrily back at Eve and says, “… fine. Three it is.”

The meeting goes back and forth, Johnathan being difficult at every point. It is almost like he doesn’t understand the rules of diplomacy. Chances are he really doesn’t.
Eventually it is decided that after the winter holidays there will be another white girl Wednesday and after that the final referendum.

After the decisions are made, Eve and the committee members take their time packing their belongings. They do so intentionally, leaving Johnathan the first to exit the room.
“I never thought I’d say this, but I’m starting to miss James.” Michael says.
“Yeah.” Sally agrees. “Say what you want about him, but at least he knows how to show respect.”
“He also was never racist.” Eve says.
Michael hangs his head and sighs. “I’ll have to apologize next time I see him.”
“If you see him before me, let him know I think he is a much better representative for the oppose then Johnathan is.” Eve says.
With that, Eve says her goodbyes and leaves.

Good lord, she has so much work to do.
She hasn’t had time for her friends in such a long time. Maybe she should organize another meeting with them.
It probably won’t hurt to check up on James either. Why on earth did he send Johnathan in his place. He isn’t sick, is he?
Then there is also the matter of her potential pregnancy. Eve just assumed the chances of William knocking her up were far too slim so she never got a pregnancy test. Perhaps it would be a good idea to get one done.

What does Eve do?
